Bike carb air correctors
Hi guys fitted a set of carbs (believed to be zx6r?) to my pinto and its getting pretty hot pretty quickly just trying a few things to see if it can
be sorted and noticed people mentioning blocking the air correctors so thought id give it a go temporarily.
Can anyone point of for definite which of these is the air corrector before I go poking things into them?

I can't comment on the holes, but if they are definitely ZX6 carbs there is no need to block anything. However I have heard of this being
necessary on ZX9 carbs. Might be worth checking what you have.

Yeah they just looked similar to a set I'd seen elsewhere. They're definitely zx*r by the looks of the trumpets etc. Is there any
definitive way of identifying them?

Measure the size of the bore at the head end. ZX6 carbs measure 37.5mm. I believe ZX9s are 40mm.

Depending on what engine you are running the main jet may need drilling out. IIRC for a stock 2.0l zetec it is 1.6mm.

I don't think they are zx6r carbs btw. Unless they are a earlier version of the ones I have.

The main jet is the one stamped 125, the other is the air correction jet. I would suggest that the main jet needs to be 180 at least. I run a standard
2ltr Black Top with R1 carbs and I found that Weber main jets from dgv carb fits perfectly. The numbers simply mean 1.8mm, nothing complicated. When
mine was set up on the rollers, the operator bunged the ACR jets up with 2 pack and redrilled them to get them correct by drilling out as required.
They finished up, if I remember correctly at .075mm......

I thought the jet pictured was the pilot jet? Isn't the main jet inside the carb? This is on the back side underneath the trumpets.

Jet on the left is air corrector - if they are ZX6R and you block it off they will go off the scale rich - learnt that from experience!
When you say it is getting hot are you assuming it is running lean? If so when is it doing it?
You've got an idle jet which as it says sets fuelling at idle. Then there is the pilot jet that deals with roughly 0-1/3 throttle. On the zx6r
these are really susceptible to getting gummed up. Take them out and soak them in carb cleaner overnight - spraying/poking through doesn't get
it. You will know if these are an issue as the car will pop and backfire at light throttle openings but be fine at full throttle.
You've then got the main itself, which is full throttle and then the needle controls fueling from 1/3 to full. Also have you balanced the carbs
- mine are very sensitive to being out of balance.
My carbs were first fitted to my 1.8 pinto. Idle screws out until i got around 13AFR, pilots untouched, mains opened out to 1.65mm and needles raised
1 notch. That gave me a good setup with safe AFRs. But it really is specific to your setup. Afteer the pinto I had them on my duratec and made an
airbox. Without the airbox I needed 1.8mains, with the airbox fitted i need 2.3mm mains! Buying an AFR gauge is certainly worth the money and you
won't regret it - makes it so easy to setup.

Just idling within a minute or so the exhaust is really really hot, will pull the jets and check sizes and clean them out. Good info on the airbox as
I was looking at making one, dont trust those pipercross filters which I currently have fitted.

If you are just idling then only the idle screws should be in play - screw them in all the way and wind them out 2.5-3.5 and you should be in the ball
park.
