Land Rover Discovery 3 - Engine Issue?
Trying to help a good friend with an issue with his land rover discovery 3 TDI
The Discovery has done 120k with full history
The problem is there's 'grey' smoke visible from the exhaust when he applies the accelerator after going down a hill
(So he's getting a plume of smoke when he accelerates after going down a hill)
This happens mainly once on a journey and then it seems to settle down a bit
I initially thought worn valve guides or stem seals, but he says he doesn't believe the smoke is Blue (as you'd expect)
He's thinking Turbo which is a bummer if it is as its a nightmare to change on one of these
The car has been scanned with no faults found, Doesn't over heat or use any water
One thing though, the fuel consumption seems to sit at 20 mpg whereas it should be nearer 27?
Any thoughts appreciated

Hi
Try the info. In this link. It gives useful suggestions to follow up based on smoke colours.

I had one and used to get about 26-27 mpg when it was working.
I had these symptoms and the mpg dropped. It was a split in one of the intercooler hoses.
It's a pretty common problem and you can buy a set of upgraded silicone ones for not a lot of money. The top one is easy to fit but there is a
bottom one which is a real pain.

Hi All
Thanks for your comments
The tip on the intercooler hoses is something we hadn't thought of so that's definitely on the list now
Thanks again

I’ve got one, had it for 5 years - best car I’ve owned.
Could be a split intercooler hose, but would expect smoke to be more black in colour.
20mpg is definitely low. Amongst other things, might be worth checking the brakes aren’t binding, fairly common cause of poor mpg on these.
Have you checked the injector readings ? Could be one or more of them at fault.
