Fuel hose protection...

Does anyone use any sort of fuel hose protection under the hood? My car has something that looks like pipe lagging around it? Is this needed?? Im replacing the fuel hose as its cracking in places, but wanted to know if it should have any protection around it? Its a Silvertop engine and the fuel side of things is inlet side so away from the heat of the exhaust

Any links to what you use would be appreciated.

THE most important thing is to use genuine R9 rated hoses. Don't buy off ebay, too much fake stuff about. Burtoms/Merlin etc etc all sell proper stuff, not cheap but anything less will fail. AFS sell R9 stamped stuff on ebay, I know 3 people who bought it, all failed in less than a year

The lagging is likely heat protection, probably not required but won't hurt.

Spec says it copes with E10 fuel, so that is fine.
The cohline stuff is very decent quality, not sure why it isn't R9 rated, maybe it is higher?
It is ebay/amazon that are teh places to avoid. Or places selling stainless braided fuel hose that has no spec at all. Lethal, especially as you can't even visually check it.

Cheers for the replies mate.

Is E10 the numbers on the fuel pumps at petrol stations? I presume its Ethenol and it destroys the fuel hose?

The R9 thing is just the American SAE rating system - the choline stuff uses the DIN ratings instead

This old thread is well worth a read still:

yes, E10 is 10% ethanol, older hoses are attacked by the stuff. Though oddly only aftermarket hoses. Factory fitted OEM stuff, some from the 80's, is OK! (in France they sometimes have a list of older compatible cars on the actual pumps, and being a saddo I was looking through the list when filling the 60L tank on our tintop)
