fuel lines

Now I have my brakes sorted out in my head I am onto the fuel.

I am planning to use brake pipe in place of this. It has he same od and wall thickness, is cheap and easy to bend - can anyone see a problem with this? I will have rubber tubing to connect it at each end to the original fittings.

Here is more details to help you understand the setup if you don't know what I am gibbering about.

My tank is finished and fitted. I plan on taking 10mm microbore copper central heating pipe from the tank to the engine and also the return but I have a dilema for the injection. The Injection on the Sierra 2.8 is the Bosch J jetronic (I think thats the name). It is the one with the fuels distributor. Fuels goes in to the centre and is then distributed to each cylinder through 1 of the 6 outlet pipes.

The problem is I have to move the fuel distributor from near side of the engine to front of the engine. For this I need to extend the 6 fuel lines. Currently it is 5mm plastic tubing with a .6mm wall. Its doesn't flex either.

Thanks.

Hi Ewan.

I was going to use microbore but didnt for two reasons. One is that 10mm wont fit efi hose - its 8mm normally, and secondly I am told that copper reacts with fuel and creates a sludge.

I used 8mm steel pipe (5mm internal) from

www.farnell.com

although you might find it easier to look up your local hydraulic supplier and buy some lenghts of straight steel tube.

Also, an sva tester might want to see real certified efi fuel hose, which is a higher spec than the normal rubber stuff, and plastic hose might be seen as a bit fragile and meltable - especially if its the kinda thing use in air tubing.

EFI usually runs around 40psi - make sure the hoses are well clamped or they will low off.

Also, dont use normal jubilee clips - they wont pass. special fuel cips that have an overlap are used. See Halfords for exmaples looking at their fuel hose packs that include two of said clips.

Steve

Do you have any more details on the 8mm steel stuff, can't find it using 8mm or steel or pipe or tube......??

What about the plan in using the brake line for the fuel distributor to injectors? can you see any issues with this.

I am currently searching Farnell for the steel pipe.

Thanks

hi Ewan

I would look it up for you now but i gotta collect car from service. If you cant find it by later today email me on stephen.gusterson@ntlworld.com and i will find it for you.

Try looking unde hydraulic tubing.

Think it comes as 3 x 2 mtr lenghts for about a tenner the pack.

Farnell also do high pressure rubber hose - i used it but not sure if its compliant.

You never really know if sva guy wants to see the right numbers on fuel pipe - halfords do 1 mtr packs expensive at about 8 quid. Europa spares do it by lenght for about 5 a metre I think.

Mail me later if ya need more!

Look for part number

3.83 a length, min three. 6m total.

This was from the book catalog - should work from the site.

Thanks folks,

I have ordered the 8mm steel stuff for the tank to engine (and return) and will go strip a Fiat at the weekend for the bendable black stuff..... thats if I get a pass to go out and play this weekend - I'm on holiday Friday but don't know what is planned yet. I'll keep quiet and hope for the best.

Black stuff

Steve - regarding your comment on the black stuff... could this be rubber from none petrol qualified rubber/plastic pipe?

We have fitted copper tube from front/back with petrol qualified rubber pipe. We've also put in two petrol filters, one prior to pump another prior to carbs to prevent sh*te from entering engine. Any further help would be appreciated on this... TA

PS Thread almost 2 years old...!
