Type 3 power handing
Can anyone tell me whether or not a type 3 gearbox is likely to melt with 130bhp put through it, ditto a cortina diff.
Cheers,
Ed

I don't know but if you ring Brian at BGH Geartech I am sure he will know. I have just picked up my modded type 9 and he is very honest and
knows his stuff.

Type 3 should handle 130 bhp as it was closely related to the earlier Cortina box but torque is another matter the old Cortina 2000e box was never
regarded as man enough to handle the old Essex V6 for long.
By Cortina diff what axle exactly do have -- assuming you have a Mk3-Mk5 the 1300cc axle is to a lower duty spec than the 2 litre and 2.3 litre --
1600cc can have either type. But 130 bhp should be OK with the lighter duty unit.

It is all from a 1600 non GT mark 4 (AFAIK)
Sounds fairly promising, the Type 3 was used on the Lotus which had almost 130bhp but I might look into the possibility of dropping in an MT75 at the
same time as I switch engine, just to be on the safe side.
Do any sites have measurements of the different boxes, so I can see if the gearstick hole, propshaft etc will line up?
Cheers,
Ed

The overall length and gear lever position were almost identical on the Cortina box and the Type 9 --- MT75 I can't help you on.
