1.8 Zetec

Hi all, im looking at getting a 1.8 zetec on ebay, it has the wiring loom but not the ECU, will i need this if i bung on some carbs. Also is it worth going for the 1.8 or should i look for a 2 litre. Cheers Scotty G.
