Engine/gearbox dilemma!??
Bear with me on this one, I'm looking for opinions and advice!!
I am considering building a class 7 autograss car for next year as a bit of a change, and want (as usual!) to do it on a budget of naff all!!
Bodyshell wise I will be using (pretty certain anyway) a mini bodyshell, obviously then gutted and spaceframed.
The car will be rear-mid engined rwd and in terms of power per pound spent and most suitable transmission per pound spent, the best ideas I have come
up with so far are SAAB 9000 2.3 turbo engine and gearbox or Volvo T5 2.3 engine and box.
I believe that the saab gearbox is known to be rather weak, which worries me as I will need to be getting at least 300hp from the engine to be
anything like competitive, but having said that the std engine is 310NM torque I believe and it is this that breaks the gearbox, so maybe it's
not such a problem.
I have not heard of failures of the Volvo gearbox, even on modded cars with around 300hp.
Anybody offer any other alternatives or views on these engines?
My other thought is to use either of these engines but replace the turbo with a supercharger.
In either case I will use an aftermarket management system so I can sort the fuelling etc with no issue.

Urrrrrrr...
Dunno much about volvos but you might be spot on with that choice.
How about audi 5 cyl turbo or do you need a transverse arrangement for the space?
Fiat coupe turbo engine is strong but dunno bout box. Lots of people take vauxhall xe turbos up to that kind of power too...

Oooh - or a turbo MI16 from a 405 T16 would be nice and ally if you could ever find one...

honda type r engine gets my vote. add a supercharger to a standard engne and 300bhp... yeah i know, best part of £2k and prob the rest..
what about a 3ltr v6? alfa, vauxhall or jag must be quite cheap from scrappers, 220bhp for ford, similar for alfa iirc...
noble and aeon put turbo's on the ford v6 unit. lower output, but the 2.5 v6 from older mondeo's are peanuts at the scrappers..
money has been thrown at them (read mountune) but i know 3ltr jag v6's (ford based) that are making 330bhp n/a.
what about a big jap turbo engine, nissan 300zx, 200sx or the like? only problem i can think is a suitable transverse box.
Ned.

200bhp for the 3ltr 12v Alfa engine as standard and 240bhp from the 24v engine. A big chimbley and induction will get you a lot more!
I have (and am selling!!) a S70 T5 and I can assure you they are good units!!
Depends how much you want to spend and how much work you want! And what there is close when you need it!

The problem is the transmission Ned, otherwise all those units sound like good ideas! I do like the honda idea but what honda gearbox will reliably
take the power.
What gearbox do Noble use?? Do they use the Ford MTX75 or what? If so, then that must be ok to a pretty high output!!

re gearboxes, i don't know myself, but there are proven solutions out there, such as noble as you quite rightly say. also the ariel atom uses
the honda engine, supercharged version available and in a rwd transverse arrangement...
the only question is whether they are gonna be expensive internals imho.

yup, volvorsport is being very helpful in the thought processes!!
I know plenty about vauxhall XE engines and fordy stuff but naff all when it comes to volvo stuff, so I'm on a steep learning curve!!!
Getting a better idea now though, both volvorsport and a chap called Stuart at SW autos have said the T5 5 speed 'box is pretty much
indestructible, apart from the synchros, which are not the end of the world to me anyway in this application!
