Drastic Measures!
Right, getting fed up of my DOHC now, its s**t! I have an MT75 gearbox, what will fit it? Maybe an off-the-shelf engine which has tuning capability
or rip another out a car (how demoralising) . Throw me a frickin' bone. Zetec? Duratec? Cossie? (any normal aspirated cheaper ones?) Want
about 150+bhp with potential for tuning. Any good companies knocking about?
Just as a side thought, would changing the gearbox to a Type 9 and going for a pinto be logical/ cheaper?

Definitely Zetec. Chuck a set of carbs and an Edis at it and you're good to go.

Ok, i'm listening. Zetec...so say a good set of webers and Edis (whats that)?
Best way to get a Zetec is...??? Off the shelf, or what car would i be looking at grabbing?
Bit technical, but is the Zetec smaller than DOHC?

Edis
Electronic Distributorless Ignition System
Made by Ford, plugs up to the crank sensor on the zetec. Will give you a failsafe ignition setting with no other kit. Add a Megajoltlitejunior (MJLJ)
for mappable ignition.
See this bloke on ebay for some more info.
Clicky Here
It doesn't get any cheaper than this.

FWIW, My blacktop zetec (see avatar) wasn't having all that much trouble keepingup with my mates 993 911 Turbo last night. Turbo only really
started making ground above 90mph.
Would be down in Le Mans with him today if the bloody ECU hadn't fried...

Cool, thats sounds like fun! I'll have to indulge once i've built mine.
What do you think 1.8, 2.0ltr Zetec?
Pros and cons of each?
Problems putting it into an MK?
How "bolt striaght on" is the Zetec to MT75, is it literally that?

My MT75 came from a DOHC and does bolt straight onto zetec. You will need to sus out what sort of ECU you will use. The one suggested seems to work or
you can go for a Emerald/Omex etc, cost a bit more but I suspect easier to set up. Choice of carbs or throttle bodies/injection both will work fine.
Find a pre "95 Mondeo for the easy instal as SVA friendly and well catered for.
Yes a Pinto will also fit straight on and is a good budget option and MK can supply all the bits to fit.

from what I understand, a 2.0i Zetec will need a 1.8 flywheel and a spigot bearing, and maybe a different starter motor. I believe that the 1.8i is
easier to fit.
A 2.0 will make more power than a 1.8 and a tuned 2.0 more than a tuned 1.8

I've got a Dunnel lightened flywheel and clutch which uses a standard Sierra spigot bush and release bearing. The Sierra DOHC starter fits and
works fine.

Duratec
I thought that the Duratec was the best one to go for as it is more tunable than the Zetec.
The Focus ST170 engine is a Duratec.

The Duratec certainly does have more potential than the zetec, unfortunately it is one of the new generation of Ford engines which does not have the
familiar Ford bellhousing which all 4 cylinder Ford engines have had for the last 30+ years.
That means aftermarket bellhousings and money.

The Focus ST170 engine is a Duratec.
There are many engines that are called duratecs ranging from the smaller 8 valvers up to the V6. The version that is currently being tweaked to around
270bhp for an NA 2.0 is the 4 cyl all aluminium 4 pot (aka I4) that is fitted to the post 2000 Mondeos.
The installation costs for the I4 can be quite high though.
My understanding is that the ST170 with vvt is based on a zetec with a duratec 'ish top end, and a duratec label.
The I4 Duratec needs a special bell housing as the gearbox mounting is different to previous Ford versions. Probably connected with it being Mazda /
Ford.
Another engine that may be worth considering is the zetec se.
One question, does anyone know why later Mondeos with Duratec engines badged as Zetec?
Also if your looking locost don't forget that you can use the Megasquirt for fuel and ignition with an EDIS module.
Cheers,
Colin

Well how much do you want to spend
good 1.8 zetec cerca 100k will set you back £50 with some one having taken it out of the car, that will give 155 bhp,,,
1.6l zetec with lower milage for the same money..bung on carbs and ignition and that will give you 100 bhp which is about the same as a dohc(siera) on
single carb..
if you want the 2l zetec then prices jump up as they are well sort after you will also want the 1.8l fly wheel(because its bigger and lighter)water
pump(because the 2l rotates the wrong way)and the sump(because the mondeo one is huge). this will give you about 165bhp..And lotts of torque
Induction im going bike carbs and ignition im using the edis 4 controled by the megajolt diy ecu..
Ive got the mt75 box ive used the 130 spec fly wheel and clutch which is 240mm, lightened by scholar engines and the westfield thrust bearing(this is
an mt75 item with a spacer glued on)BUT there are other options....

The zetec name actually became the trim spec of the car above the LX.
I'm on the lookout for a mk3 mondeo for my parents and was initially confused with the 'zetec' badging
Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.
