Zetec more power

Hi all,
I'm running a 2 litre zetec in my hillclimb car. It's running home made throttle bodies (from 45DCOE'S), fabricated 4 branch exhaust manifold and emerald management but otherwise standard.
I'd like to get some more power out of it low cost style.

Has anyone out there had any experience of different cams or home done porting?

If so what sort of results did you get?

Cheers

David

David,

From what I hear, the Piper 285 Cams can add a few horses.

Alternatively, have you thought about a small turbo? RS manifolds regularly pop up on ebay for not all that much.

Hi,
I've also heard of people fitting the piper cams, but have never seen any figures to work out if they are worth the money.

I'm not realy into turbo cars as I don't like the on/off way they supply power.

A small turbo won't have such a noticeable on-off effect.

If you look at the Emerald files, there is a map for an 1800 Zetec on 45s with Piper 185 Cams giving (IIRC) around 175hp - maybe worth a call to Emerald?

I'd say go the raceline route but they're Expensive (note the capital 'E' )

Have you taken it to a rolling road. If not that is the first thing i would do. They can often do a lot to an engines performance for not a lot of money!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I think a call to Emerald for their advice might be in order.

I was hoping for about 200 BHP.

Did you get your engine running nicely at idle?

It's just that i just looked through your photo archive and have seen that you are using the Mondeo inlet gasket.

I found that i couldn't get good idle/progression using that gasket because of the large passages between the ports. It effectively means that each cylinder in turn sees all four butterflies and the slightest touch on the thottle causes a massive change to the air flow.

I'm now using the gasket from an Escort (with Aluminium inlet manifold) with a small amount of silicone sealer on the bits between ports, to make sure each cylinder is sealed from the others.

The engine now pulls really smooth and clean from low down.

Thanks

David
