Some Advice required on first start of a new engine

I know More money than sense springs to mind, but i bought a new tuned pinto from vulcan engineering a while back (they are my next port of call when they open). but I have used the donor car's original battery.

I have followed the following proceedure what do people think?

1. fill engine with oil
2. remove plugs and cam cover.
3. turn engine over and check oil circulation.
4. replace plugs and cam cover.
5. fill car with petrol
6. turn engine over.

then the battery died

7.charged up the battery.
8.turned engin over. no start
9.checked that there is a spark, Yes
10.checked there is petrol in the carb, Yes
11. turned the engine over, black puffs of smoke. but engine won't fire.
12.open throtle and turn over struggling

battery dead again after 5 to 10 mins

is it that the battery is U/S and not providing enough power?

is it that the timing is out?

has any one any ideas, why an engine with both fuel and power does not fire up?

all your thoughts and comments are welcome.

did you either prime the fuel pipes, or dripple some down the neck of the carb? It is very draining sucking fuel through. My battery died a few times when i used it to suck the fuel through.

Is the ignition timing set correctly?

If you're getting a spark to all four plugs and there's fuel getting to the carb then my guess would be you've got the plug leads round the wrong way- or the timing's really out.

But I'm no mechanic!

Hope that helps, I'm sure others who know what they're talking about will be along soon!

As James is stating - go back to basics and make sure everything is in the right places. Even if the engine was supplied timed up it doesnt harm to re-check the static settings. This has been discussed in the last month or so, so try a search or get the haynes maual out. If you have a dyno plot of your engine then i would guess it is OK.

If you have fuel (assumed to be fresh / new fuel) and have spark there cant be much wrong. i hvae had a problem with dead battery before but i wouldnt have thought this would be your main concern. Is the spark strong and the coil / dizzy in god condition??

Did the carbs (what are they) come with engine / do you know if they are jetted / balanced ok etc.

Ive heard of people giving them a quick sniff of easy start but cant say if this is good idea or not (is it right that the engines can get 'addicted' to the stuff - sounded a bit strange to me but leads me to being cautious).

I have been onto vulcan and they confirmed that they can only statically set up the ignition in the work shop. they said that the timing may be too advanced, and i should loosen the dizzy, crank the engine over and adjust dizzy till it fires.

what do you all think?

the spec of the engine is as follows

pinto bored to 2.1ltr
maxiflow 2 head with unleaded conversion
balanced and lightened
twin dellorto 45's
Piper FR34 cam
electronic ignition inc new Dizzy
breather system

the engine was supplied complete leads and all so the engine and ignition system are completly new.

Is the engine struggling to turn over due to it being new and still tight or because of the timing bring way out?If you set everything to TDC it should fire up and run while you set the timing dynamically with your strobe. That is assuming everything else is working properly.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
