Diff Code 3.14?!
Hi everyone, i have just aquired a diff and attached sierra diesel 2.3 and have been looking around for any means of identification...
On the VIN plate in the box labled "axle pt. ar." i have the code "M"
On the diff tag itself i have the code
B 3BG4006 KC
4A 314 3C18
So my question is; Is this a diff with a ratio of 3.14 ?!, seems to be the case so far!

From the Haynes 4 cylinder petrol manual.
Final Drive ratio
1.3 models....3.77:1
1.6 models except economy:
Saloon & Hatch....3.62:1
Estate.......3.38:1
1.6 Economy.....3.38:1
1.8 models
4 speed and autos.....3.62:1
5 speed.....3.92:1
2.0 carb models except P100
manual....3.62:1
Auto....3.38:1
2.0 fuel injected
Manual...3.92:1
Auto.....3.62:1
P100 (Live beam axle remember)....4.625:1
Doesn't look like theres any such thing as a standard Sierra diff.
1.3litre 3.77:1
1.6 econ 3.38:1
1.6 3.62:1
1.6 est 3.92:1
1.8 4 speed 3.62:1
1.8 5 speed 3.92:1
2.0 carb 3.62:1
2.0 inj 3.92:1
Box 10 - Axle
M=3.14
A=3.36
U=3.38
V=3.62
3=3.64
D=3.92

There is (if I remember right) a small tab on the diff that has the ratio stamped on it.
The axel letter cannot be trusted - mine was supposed to be a 3.38 - wound up with a 3.62!

From what ive read, these diffs are very rare, is anyone interested in purchasing it?
37k on it, all Mot certificates to prove milage.

Was that fitted to a standard 2.3 Diesel? Tow pack? Estate?
They are mighty hard to source nowadays! JoelP will certainly be interested to hear about your luck... 
How much did you buy the Sierra for, if you don't mind me asking?
Well done and good luck with whatever you're gonna use it in! I hope a BEC is on the cards!

yeah ive got the numbers;
B 3BG4006 KC

on a little metal tag on the diff.
Im sure it is hard to trust a Vin plate if the diff has been changed as some point but as far as i am aware this sort of work has never been carried
out , as this car has only 37k miles!

There is an error in the codes above. Should be as follows
V = 3.38
U = 3.62
Certainly looks like you've acquired a 3.14

Cheers! if this actually turns out to be a 3.14!, This one was (still is) fitted to a 2.3 diesel (engine code XD2) Sierra 5 door tow pack hatch.
Manufactured in 1982 on a Y plate. Its in good condition overall, water pump leek is the only thing which stops it being road usable. Starts and runs
fine tho.
As much as i'd love to use this , i currently dont have the space or time tragic i know!

i think the Y plate is the key, the age. All newer ones seem to be 3.38, including estates and models with towbars. Well done!
Incidentally, the easiest way to check if the car has its original diff is to check the speedo against another car - when the diff changes, the speedo
starts to read wrong, i believe the output on each gearbox is specific for each ratio of diff.
and hellfire is correct about the code errors, i found out to my cost! easy to remember which go together by the 'AV' cable. Not AU for
gold...

I Think i might need to sort a couple of things out with it first, before anyone can drive it off. water pump is sticking and oil needs topping up.
Otherwise should be road legal.Not bad for a 23 year old car, one owner from new who always garaged it! Ther must be very few of these around now, the
'net yields hardly any info/pics at all... some ford owners club would probably consider it a classic !!
