fuel filters

i am currently trying to set up a 2 litre pinto using the factory EFI (all out of a 1990 granada)

at the momoent fuel is fed into a low pressure filter before the high pressure pump, then into a high pressure filter before the fuel rail.

this causes the pump to make a terrible noise, which can be eliminated by removing the low pressure filter.

obviously, this low pressure filter (designed for carburettor type flow rates) is the problem and a higher flow rate filter is required.

can i just use the high pressure filter before the high pressure pump? or will this type of filter starve the pump?

I used a renewable element aftermarket filter before my pump and it works fine. I'm not sure of the flow rate of a high presure filter, how about checking the flow rate with some pipe and a bottle to compare the two.

The noise is called cavitaion -- in simple terms thousands of tiny bubbles of vapour caused by the fuel flash boiling inside the pump.

All you need before the pump is a screen fillter best way to do this a slip on fillter on the end of the suction tube inside the fuel tank however if your suction is built into the tank you should be able to get away without one.

tried putting the inline filter i have before the pump last night. still made the noise.

the hp inline filter has the capacity but much have too much of a pressure drop for the lp side of the pump.

ive noticed some places sell in line fuel injection filters for use before the pump.

anyone know about these? are they less fine to give a lower pressure drop?

where can i get a slip on filter britishtrident? it would need to be fairly small diameter (<20mm) for me to be able to fit it

The early 90s Rover 214 has a neat little push on pot filter on the end of the fuel suction tube/sender unit -- easy to get from the top through a little cover in the rear seat/load space area -- british cars of the Allegro/Marina/Avenger era also used them so the odds are the Montego/Masetro range used the same part -- it was a Smiths part so perhaps still available new from LSUK.

Failing that sock fillters are sold by most fuel system suppliers -- but get the right one as most are designed for submerged fuel pumps.

The other things that will help is to mount your fuel pump as low as possible and consider restricting the return line a bit.
