Do I need a pressurised expansion tank?

(1.4 K-series, ex-Rover 25.)

I did a running test today to check for leaks, etc. No coolant leaks, slow expansion into the unpressurised expansion tank, the fan cut in at 100 degrees (Polo rad with the thermostat that came with it), then coolant started spraying out of the top of the expansion tank so I shut it down sharpish.

Any ideas, in particular:

- should I get a new thermostat to cut the fan in at a lower temperature (checking the Haynes Rover 25 manual it seems the standard rad fan cuts in at 100 degrees, so should be OK???)

- do I need a pressurised expansion tank? The Rover 25 has one, so I am guessing that I will need one too.

- if so, has anyone got a spare one? The Rover one has a 0.9-1.2 bar pressure cap, if that is any help. The manual is not forthcoming on the capacity of the standard expansion tank... I have a pressurised expansion tank from a Metro 1.4 K series (older one), but a) I dont know the pressure cap rating (and it doesn't seem to have a vent) and b) it looks a little small.

Cheers

Have you got a pressurised cap on the radiator before it goes into the expansion tank?

Cheers

I know my GTM has an expanson tank. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that you absolutely must keep your engine cool.

P.S. How did you handle the bypass hoses ? Heater, or a loop of hose ?

Mookaloid: no pressurised cap on the radiator

Zilspeed: loop of hose

...looks like I need a pressurised tank!

You certainly need a pressure cap somewhere in the system!
