Normally aspirated Cosworth
Anyone here put a cossie head on a pinto block?
I am thinking ahead to next year, naturally I want more power from my motor about 250 bhp should do it
How easy is this if I put a cossie head with suitable porting on my 205 pinto block? would I get the power I am looking for? - is my type nine up to
it? How much would this cost me?
Thoughts anyone?
Cheers

Without the turbo or with.
Without, loads of money. The ports are tiny and need opening up a hell of a lot, then naspi camshafts, verniers, pistons, carbs, exhaust manifold, and
your Type Nine isn't up to it.
With turbo, loads of money. Your crank, rods and pistons are not up to it, new induction and fuel pump needed, new exhaust and your Type Nine
isn't up to it.
Cheaper to get a complete turbo running gear and swap the lot in. If you want it naspi then its going to cost you big whatever you do.

Shamelessly stolen from the WSCC...
Suggest you invest in a copy of Des Hammil's "How to Powertune Ford SOHC" ( ISBN 1-874105-81-2) which has a 20 page section on N/A
Cosworth and Pintworths.
In summary, if you put a standard Cossie head on a Pinto block you'll see around 170 BHP. Looks good but less effective than a big valve pinto
head. Revs would be limited to 7000 but a proper cossie bottom end should be OK to 9000
You need to increase compression to around 11:1 by fitting raised top forged pistons. Next the head will need extensive and expensive machining to
open up both inlet and exhaust ports. The hydraulic followers will need replacing with solid ones and the cams changed for ones of higher duration and
possibly lift (depends on power output you want but note you would need special valvesprings with higher lift cams to prevent valve binding).
With suitable carbs (45 or possibly 48's), inlet manifold and vernier pulleys, you should see 220-240 bhp.
Good thread here

Thinking about this, I really need over 250 BHP
Can a Honda S2000 motor be tuned or chipped to achieve this?
The cosworth option looks as if it is going to be tricky and expensive.
The Honda option will mean more work with mountings and exhaust etc but could work out cheaper?
anyone used one of these?

True.........
However I am competing with Caterhams and Westfields on the hill climbs and I need more power if I'm going to close the (quite large) gap
between me in my Pinto MK and the Duratec/XE/etc exotic stuff

Millington - drool
Turbo - not keen - probably without a good reason but I really want to stay normally aspirated.

why bother, other than being way cool, when the s2000 already has a rear drive trans. But, on another thought, the new honda motors spin in the
direction god intended, finally, so why not just mate up an K20vtec? Anyway, happy building.

reason is that the honda ratios are no good for hillclimbing and sprinting (despite there being 6 of them!) and gearkits are readily available off-the
shelf (from Quaife) in the UK to turn the std type 9 ford box into a six speed sequential with ideal ratios.

has anyone thought of a reason not to run a Honda engine though a.n.other rearwheel drive box?Wait....Yes they run "backwards" and
you'll need a conversion plate. But turn the diff over, drain becomes breather etc etc.Careful with the oil level blah blah blah.Apart form the
engine to 'box 'plate it should be worth a try?
