Engines
Ok boys and erm...well...boys...and of course the 2 lady builders.
Quick question for you since I'm always curious and interested to learn. What do we all think of Pug, Toyota and Nissan engines? And
particularly good ones? Any to avoid?
Answers and thoughs on a postcard.... lol

Toyota 4age is fairly well used. Light and tuneable, not sure on cost.

Nice engines for tintops - Far too heavy for a kit car - Avoid all the ones you've mentioned above (well you did ask what we think )
Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, not around the eyes, look into my eyes.
You NEED a bike engine.

you want one of these:
200hp and untouched internally apart from a set of rod bolts to allow 7500 rpm.
Before anybody starts talking about prices, the throttle bodies were s/h, along with an MBE 956E ecu, loom, coil pack, injectors, filter etc etc etc
etc and I paid £600 for that lot, plus £250 for the engine which has a Coscast head and was test driven by my mate in his Calibra for 15,000 miles or
so!

They are Jenvey. The manifold is too even though it says SBD on it. He apparently holds the rights to the pattern and thus fixes the prices!!
Have to say that Volvo vid you posted on the other thread got me going!! Jeez that thing has some poke!!!
Not my cup of tea for "locost" use but got me thinking about the grasser again!
problem is I really can't cope with lag on that, split second delay off the line and I'd get annihalated..........really got me thinking
about volvo turbo engine but without the turbo and with a big eaton blower instead. An M90 or M112 should do the trick......hmmmm thinks!!!

well , ive got the stuff for making the bottom end unbreakable and 2.5 litres !!
theres a couple of chaps running them out there in NA form .
well as long as the charger can flow enough air for 600 hp , its doable

Don't think I'll be going for that sort of power!! A gearbox (transverse one!) that can take that might be tricky!!
I'd be looking at a realistic 350hp, hopefully more but 350 would be competitive in a 500kg car.
I don't think an eaton M112 will flow enough for 600hp! You need those ruddy great yank chargers for that sort of power I think!
An M90 should be good for 350ish max and an M112 for 400 I think.
At the moment I will be honest and say that this is pie in the sky, but in 6 months time (post 7 build and house repair etc) I should be financially
stable enough to start the build!

I'm a toyota fan so I'll give you some options.
The 16V 4AGE of course is well known and failry easy to tune up.
Don't discount the 20V 4AGE if you want a light weight, compact engine with individual throttle bodies as standard which will rev to 8500RPM all
day. £750 for the black top with 150BHP.
I personally wouldn't bother tuning the 20V unless you want to go turbo or SC, in which case use the silver top instead (stronger rods).
Theres the 1.8 VVTi ally engine which is fairly conservative as standard but you can stroke it to 2L and then turbo it for ultimte power. go to Monkey
Wrench Racing (USA tuner) for the parts to do this.
The 1.8VVTLi engine from the Elise/Celica is another one to leave alone unless you SC or turbo it. I did and got 240BHP from a modest 7PSI using a
roots blower. Another one for high RPM fans!
You could consider the 3SGE NA 2L engines as they are well designed. The ultimate is the BEAMS blacktop 16V 3SGE VVTi which has 210HP as standard and
again will sustain high RPM all day. Pricey and a little rare
If you want ultimate power then it has to be the 3SGTE turbo lump. Just get a late ST205 engine and minor nods will get you near 300BHP. Alternatively
take it to Fensport hand over some cash and get 600BHP+.

The 2.0 Turbo from the Nissan 200SX seems a pretty good choice.
All alloy, 196BHP out the box, 280BHP easy, 300+ with standard internals.
Jasper's just bought one for his Striker.
Cheers,
James
