what is wrong with this set up?

The accelerator pedal:
accelerator pedal
accelerator pedal


.. and cable at carbs.
cable at carbs
cable at carbs


apparently it was driven like this!!

There is nothing to hold the outer cable in place for starters so the full range of throttle movement is not possible!!

Likewise the crimp on connector at the carb. Very dangerous - if it was possible to pull the cable far enough, it can catch under the linkage!!!

I will be looking for bit of brass tubing to make the appropriate ends. Last night I managed to drill a 1.5m though a 5 mm brass screw that will hold the outer in place allowing the inner to pass thourgh but am considereing a motorcycle throttle ferrule.

A suggestion - have a REALLY good look at all the other safety-critical bits of the car...

...That bodge is just a bit scary!

Bloody hell. Even i wouldnt do anything like that.

As David says, check the rest of the car over with a very good eye. Makes my wonder how the brake pedal is on there.

Looks like ther was a bracket at the pedal end but it has snapped off NICE.

Nut at top just left of center

I think I see what you are saying. There is a cut out for the rod to move in - the pedal is far to muh forward due to the cocked up cable arrangement - hence the top of the linkage should be in the U shaped gap.

as an aside, I want to reduce the angle the cable goes through to the carb linkage (the orange thing in the right of the photo) so been thinking about making a bracket with a small pulley - a 3 cm disc with a groove for the cable to run in; any one see any can't see any problems with that?

(I want to keep the height of the cable as low as possible andwithout making it go through tight bends,)

Not that critical really, it's only holding the air filter backplate. He probably lost the original flat nut and wiggly washer.

It is if the nut comes off and allows a bolt to drop into air filter.

That may be, BUT. At the other end of the carb(s) I note that the Carbs have been solidly mounted to the manifold. NO Isollating "O" ring gasket, NO insulating Rubber washers or thackery washers. Just an assortment of bolts.





Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

Between the carb and inlet manifold is a piece of white spacer stuff - not sure what this is made of. I would expect there should be gaskets either side of this unless it is soft stuff that actas as a gasket?

The nylocs have been replaced by m8 nuts - there were spring washer already on them so the nylocs should not have come undone.
