zetec plumbing
Hi.
I'm at the point of plumbing the Zetec in my car.(Velocity)
I was just wondering how other had done this. Brought a kit like westfield sell.
or used hoses from various tin tops.

Hehe - it might help with an 'L' in the title ;-)
I'm at the same stage and www.zetec-cat.co.uk is a good reference.
If it was me - I'd pop down to Hal-Frauds and purchase some bendy pipe - work out all the angles and where the pipeworks going for YOU - then,
if you have the money swap some of it for some decent hose - Samco etc..
There are plenty of configurations for the Zetec - some use a water rail, some don't.
Good luck - I'll be checking back to see what advice you get ;-)

Cheers  I have my uses,not many i must admit but a few.
The site has some very good info on a variety of zetec plumbing,and the added bonus of dimensions and part numbers too.

Save your money and don't use a water rail they don't work correctly.
Plumb the engine as it was designed to be done and it warms up correctly, use the Ford thermo housing. Big outlet to the top rad inlet. Two small
outlets connect using "t" connectors in the bottom hose between bottom rad outlet and water pump. Connect an expansion pipe with another
"t" into one of the small pipes going to the bootom hose. Tiny pipe in the top of the housing to the small connector on the expasion tank.

Can you please explain in IDIOT PROOF terms for me!

I've got all the hoses left from my Zetec install - Polo rad and Raceline water rail - all Samco and aluminium tube if you're
interested.
It's a myth that the Water Rail's don't work - if you have no space at the rear of the block you have little choice apart from
making your own!

correct, my raceline water rail works fine. Even better that it was a cheap find (ebay if I remember). I think retro ford do one for a reasonable
price (advertise in PPC).

The raceline unit I'm sure does work fine but why spend £150 quid when the Ford unit fits and works as the cooling system was dsigned. It allows
coolant circulation around the head during warm up.
Plumbing goes like this...
Exhaust side 32mm connection straight to rad top connection.
Exhaust side 18mm connection to a "T" piece in the bottom hose.
Inlet side 18mm(ish) connector to another "T" in the bottom hose.
Top small 8mm connector to the small connection found on the neck of most expansion tanks.
Bottom rad connection to the water pump. Tiger do a neat little ali pipe with two 18mm bosses welded to it to allow the two connections mentioned
above. I used a Samco reducing elbow on the pump to get it down to 32mm and in the direction of the bottom rad outlet.
The expansion tank connection can be run to a "T" in the 18mm pipe you are running from the inlet side connection.
Use the standard Ford thermostat (93 deg C I think), and a 15psi rad cap as the system tends to run at too higher presure for a 8mm cap.

I agree - use the standard setup if it fits - in my case it didn't! The photo

Must admit, I thought the same, that's damn near mid-engined! My lump will allow me to keep the standard setup as I've got a Zetec/MT75
going in a Pinto/Type 9 chassis. This is a good thing 'cos I'm a softy and want a heater

Top hose you can see goes to top of rad
Bottom of rad goes to water pump and has the lower hose from the thermostat housing T-ed into it.

Hi All
I've had several U2U's about the bits. I've sold the rad, water rail and the car! All I have left is the plumbing bits which I was
hanging on to just in case I needed them for the new project. Sadly, the R1 engine has much smaller hoses.
I'll take some photos and post them to this site later.

i've got his rad!
and I'm ashamed to say that its still in the boot of my rover along with the manta gearbox, i just havn't had time to do anything

trying to get the house build of the ground wyn (pun intended)
also i'm a bit pissed off with another project of mine so i'm throwing a bit of money at that at the moment
its repairing my lathe, im getting really annoyed with outsourcing jobs i coudld do myself if the lathe was 100%
still going to be using the emerald with the r1?
also i noticed you got rid of the astra dash too

I can understand your difficulties with the build - been there! Our greatest problem was with our architect - absolute waste of space - I'm not
suggesting they all are though!
My project is driving me mad - loads of changes in direction - the chassis is now with a guy near Lampeter - he's ex Duffee / Darian so knows
his stuff! He's going to be doing all the fabrication of the backend of my Swift - he has a Radical in the workshop so there may be some
similarities when it's finished .
I'm hoping that when I get it back it'll be a simple job of bolting it all together, wiring, plumbing and setup. Yes, I'm planing on
running the R1 on the Emerald system. I think it'll be relatively easy to fit an external crank sensor - did I say the wiring would be easy?!
