Was pinto timing - now megajolt map

i dont suppose anyone has a megajolt map that might be good for my Pinto do they? Im a megajolt numpty so may need basic descriptions etc.

My Pinto is std bottom end, lightened (slightly) flywheel, 40 thou skimmed head, Kent Fr32, injection head plus basic porting. 38 DGAS (at the mo). Decent exhaust manifold.

I already have toothed wheel and VR sensor fitted. Need to fit throttle position sensor yet. Have megajolt, coli pack and leads on shelf. In theory shouldnt take long to fit. Im a bit apprehensive of it in case it doesnt work and i cant get it running etc. Should i be???? dont want to risk having probs at trackday in 2 weeks time.

My reasoning is that the megajolt should be easier to tweak at the track than my current std electronic ign set up. What do you reckon?

Thanks for those Ray. I assume the .cfg files are what megajolt software needs and the .bmp are the ones i can easily read.

So - 2D will be for set up without TPS connected and 3D with???

Which map would you suggest would suit my set up. I would estimate my bhp to be between 120 and 130.

Is MJ really as easy as people make out to tweak on the move or in pit lane on a track day.

Unless 1 of the base maps you've been sent works well, or you've got a day to dedicate to setting it up then i'd leave the Dizzy on.

A track day is about the worst place I could think to try and set it up... Wasting the time you could be spending on the track.
What could work for a track day might be pretty undriveable on the road and your unlikey to be able to hear it "pink" with all the exhaust and wind noise should you get the map wrong.

They are pretty easy to set up.. they just require the time, effort and input to get it right.. then your laughing!

Don't be put off by the doubters!!

Darren,

There is a map in my photo archive under Pinto. It worked well on my setup which was similar to yours but with R1 carbs.

I would agree that it would not be the best use of a trackday but you have a couple of weeks beforehand and could have a good map sorted by then.

Even a half sorted 3D MJ map will be better than a 2D dizzy which will always be a compromise. Go for it, and to those who tried to talk you out of it when you realise the benefits.

I was a bit phased by the Megasquirt but even that is fairly easy once you get started.

Thanks TM.

After messing with advance etc the bloody car died on me on Monday. Wont start now. Will get it back to the 10deg starting point and try and get it restarted.

Before i changed the engine i was running around 14 to 16 degs at idle (vac of for setting) and ran it on road with vac advance connected. Only change from then to now apart from bottom end being changed is that i have fitted a vernier cam wheel. It is highly possible that a current setting of between 10 and 12 deg is equivalent to the old ones between 14 and 16 deg due to potentially improved cam timing. Hence when ive tried it at 15 deg recently it was just too much and it actually ran quite well at 10 deg.

Im starting to think the std dizzy is too much of a compromise. Your map will probs be a good starting point along with one of the ones Ray kindly sent me. Ill have a think about fitting the MJ again. Need to think how to fit the throttle sensor to the 38DGAS or pedal.

Well, ive enjoyed myself this afternoon doing some MJLJ research. Ive successfully loaded the software into my laptop and managed to load Rays maps into it as well. Ive also come to the conclusion that i can do a dummy install of the hardware without messing on fitting the TPS to my current carbs and should get it running easily in 2D mode. Then step 2 will be bike carbs and step 3 fit the TPS to them.

At least in the short term i will have a configurable ignition set up so i can take the guess work out of what i was trying to do at the end of last week.

Soon i might have a good electronic ignition set up to sell to finance buying a few bits i need to get the bike carbs ready for fitting. It will also make my Snap-on advance timing light retired early as the laptop can do its job.

Darren,

I have a TPS which you can have. It has a simple rod coming out which twists as you apply throttle. This can be connected to the pedal or to the end of your throttle spindle with a small piece of tube.

Let me know if you want it.

the MJLJ wiring loom i have has a basic potentiometer pre-wired. Im just shying off fitting it to the 38DGAS only to fit to bike carbs soonish after.

Ive already fitted toothed wheel. I also fitted VR sensor on what i thought was a great bracket. Bloody bracket has snapped and sensor has been lost!!!!!!!! Just found this out tonight - gutted. Need new sensor and bracket now. I have Zetec camshaft position sensor - i hope this will work.

Graham man - givower!!! Divvent putus off now man.

Looks like a suspected ignition amp problem has made the car die. Tried 2 coils - no spark. When this happened last time it was the amp. Im not even getting a spark straight out of the coil. So looks like it has got to be MJLJ.

Interesting night so far. Nose cone off - find VR sensor is gone!! Find new sensor in box of bits - get it fitted.
Find coil pack and leads and get roughly into place. Fit wires to box, power, earth connected. Press start button and it fires!!!!!! albeit as rough as badgerums and in limp mode but it works. Now tpo connect laptop.

Fingers crossed everyone that i get a connection. Im going in!!!!

Fitted leads to coil pack. Connected leads to plugs 1-3-4-2
Connected coil pac h to MJLJ.
Connected perm live and ign live direct to battery.
Connected earth direct to battery.
Connected VR to MJLJ box.
Turned key and car started - rough but started with some revs.

Connected serial to usb adaptor to MJLJ. Connected USB lead to MJLJ and to laptop.
Red LED on MJLJ.

Opened up MJLJ software. Got a screen that basically said unitnot connected. Pressed OK, MJLJ screen came up. Warning at bottom said not connected to device. Tried 'Get Config' buttom but same appeared.
