SWMBO's Rover Metro 114 GTa
As above SWMBO's Rover Metro 114 GTa Pile of S**t has gone wrong again, sunday it would not start as if the starter motor has stuck, rock it in
gear, tap starter with hammer hey presto it started,
Last nite at 6pm same again in works carpark, tried to bump it, nothing didnt even turn the engine , so a mate of mine has looked and he tried it
today and it started to turn eventually and fired up he seems to think its hydraulicing, we rebuilt the engine after she managed to snap a valve
spring end of last year. Used a pucker head gasket, i'm not aware of it gettin over hot. does anyone have any experience of this or is it just
the good old k series again??
Mike

Not sure quite what this means, but from what you have said it sounds like a starter motor problem which would be very unlikely to be related to the
possible problems of overheating which some K series engines suffer from. Possibly just the ring gear on the starter motor sticking, or the motor
itself or the solenoid or maybe the wire connecting the two.

If you think it's hydraulicing, then after a decent run let it sit for an hour, then remove the plugs and turn it over on the starter. if you
get a shower of water you've got a problem.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Sounds like your starter is nadgered mate. Brushes are the most likely culprit.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Did you fit a new inlet manifold gasket when you did the head gasket?? They leak water into the inlet port/cylinder which will cause them to have a
hydraulic lock AND they bend con rods big time.!! Check the inlet gasket!!

Most likely cause is a starter motor fault could be something very simple like the fork is sticking due to crap build up, just take the starter off an
clean it.

I've been playing with the very same starter motor on a 414. On the one I took off the car and the two from scrappies, the braided cable from
the solenoid to the inside of the starter had work hardened and snapped. Trying to resolder them ended up melting the gubbings inside the windings.

Thanks for the replies guys,
answers to a few of them
Yes fitted new inlet manifold gasket but will check it again.
Had all the plugs out no evidence of water but wasn't stood very long so will give that another go.
Another pointer that its the head gasket is that when the expansion bottle top is removed with the engine running the water overflows.
Steaming through exhaust slightly as well, looks like its gonna be head off at weekend!
Thanks again
Mike
