Zetec Compression
Hi all. Got my breaker Zetec, 1994, 80k, stripped the surplus bits off and put it on a stand yesterday.
Outside looks pretty good but turning it by hand shows one cylinder has almost no compression.
I'll check it properly next weekend, but has anyone found compression problems rebuilding Zetecs and is there a No 1 most common cause?
Hopefully it's something fairly simple....

Those early engines suffered from sticking valves if the wrong oil was used, though I wouldn't expect that to be a problem when just turning
over by hand.
Have you tried the old trick of pouring a little bit of oil into the cylinder and seeing if compression goes up?

Thanks.
Not yet. I'm planning to take the head of anyway, seemed sensible to change gasket while it's out of the car, so I'll have a better
look then. Hopefully it's just a sticking tappet and valve is sitting a bit open - that's easy to fix...

Piston Rings
I suggest you take at least one piston out and look at the rings.
When I dismantled my similar age engine the oil control rings were gummed up and not functioning right. A new set of rings was not that expensive.
