oil pissing out of the breather

been for a blast in marks car this morning, in 4 miles we filled the half litre catch tank and had enough left over to make a nice puddle on the scuttle. Any ideas what causes an engine to blow out this quantity of oil so quickly? At this rate it will be empty after a single lap tomorrow!

Today im fitting a 2 litre catch tank, so that it will last a session without making a mess. In the long run though, whats the likely cause? The engine was rebuilt 100 miles ago, although that was 4 years now.

What engine is it? My crossflow used to belch out oil smoke if filled to max on dipstick , fine if only halfway between max and min.

Sounds like either rings or a badly designed breather system.

Does it have a breather from top and bottom or just the one. I always try to have two to help balance any pressure difference.

Ive just returned from a road test in mine and noticed the exact same thing in the Pinto. Got me worried now as well. Just replaced the bottom end over winter with one that has only done 50K miles or so. I suspect it was standing for a while.

Ive got the oil filler cap breathing to catch tank. Also modded the std Pinto breather (took out the springloaded plunger) and got this breathing to same catch tank. Oil level is just below halfway on dipstick.
I emptied the tank last night and it had some horrid looking liquid inside - defo not oil. Now it has about 2 to 3 " of oil in bottom (approx 1 litre tank) after only 10 to 12 miles.

An unknown for me is that std block breather outlet had 2 small bore outlets. I blocked one and took other to catch tank. Maybe the bore is now too small.

Very strange. Will ask Steve some advice on breather set up tomorrow. Hopefully there will be another Pinto to take a look at. Hopefully have a chat to Joel and Mark to get some ideas.
