Diff using up diff oil
Does anyone have a tube attached to the breather tube on the diff to stop the oil spraying out??
I'm asking as today I investigated my diff (it was quite noisy and got quite hot in use).... I took the bolt out and refilled it through the
breather... took about 50-75ml before the gorgeous smelling stuff started flowing out... I wonder if it's been running a little low for a while
(though the cars only done 200-300 miles).....
Is this normal? I thought diffs were pretty much fit-and-forget? Or do they need re-filling at intervals... I'm using super leightweight
shockproof oil if that makes any difference (? boils off)....

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

not quire F&F - the oil gets broken down by the mesing of the gears so does need replaceing. It shouldn't get used up - any loss is due to
leaks at the hub ends or via the breather.

Are you trying to say you don't have a breather tube attached?
If so then I'd recommend cutting approx 4 inch section of flexible tubing and attaching it over the breather outlet.
Some people route these tubes straight up and cable tie them onto the roll bar/chassis but I'd recommend looping it over to point it down and
cable tie it to itself.
You'd be surprised how hot the diff oil can get when you're ragging the car so you can sometime get a little out the top breather on say a
trackday (hence pointing the tube down rather than up).
Noticable amounts are most likely due to a leak. You can buy diff seal kits on eay relatively cheap.
Best get it opened to check - you don't want to run with no diff oil at all.
