Info Rover K16 MLS Head Gasket & Oil Ladder

Some of you may know Ford developed a multi layer head gasket for the Freelander 1.8 -- it will fit all K series 4 cylinder engines.

It is cheaper than the MG-Rover X-Part gasket.

The gasket comes in two parts, a lower steel gasket which has the fire rings and an upper section which sticks to the cylinder head.
The gasket material appears to be steel with the interface surfaces between the two parts of the gasket coated in a teflon like substance.
It dosen't have the silicone sealant tracks that were a feature of the Payne manufactured MG-Rover Powertrain gasket.

The gasket is much thicker the original type which will lower the compression ratio.
Ford however state it is less tolerant of variations in liner height than the Rover spec gasket

Personally will I continue to preffer using the original type unless the engine has already experienced gasket failure.

Also as part of the effort to toughen up the 1.8 engine Ford have also introduced a reinforced oil ladder for the cylinder block with the object of stiffening the engine, this was originally an MG-Rover project for stiffening the block for a higher output version of the Turbo 1.8. This part is fairly cheap mod at under 30 pounds from Rimmer Brothers and might be a good idea for any K16 engine.

Part numbers are
Head Gasket Multi Layer LVB500190
Oil Rail Free Lander spec LCN000140L

Head bolt torque settings are unaltered
ie Tighten in 3 stages
Torque to 20nm
Then + 180 degree
Then + 180 degrees.
