How can you find out/prove engine age?

I was on the phone ot the nice chap at the SVA centre on Monday and he advised me that as I don't have the V5 for the rebuilt 4.2 Range Rover engine I bought I would need to prove the engine is pre-cat age (pre '95) and that the letter I have form the company I bought my engine off will not suffice to prove its age (as it is their interest to tell me it is a pre-95 one so no CAT needed)...

I had the National Motor Heritage Centre suggested as they can produce a certificate to sprove engine age, but they only cover up to 1989 (according to their website) so no go there.

I then contacted Land Rovers customer service centre who advise me that they do not need keep any information on when the engines were produced !!!!!!!

Contacted Rimmer Bros and they cannot help, only it is a 1991 - 1995 engine although I did find on their Range Rover engine mountings page the comment;

"All V8 models from 1970 until mid 1994 are fitted with the same type of engine mountings. From mid 1994 (VIN prefix LA), a redesigned front cover (incorporating a crank-driven oil pump) is fitted to V8 models; as a result, the engine mountings have been altered. The changes affect the following engine numbers onwards:
3.9 litre - 35D08928B, 36D25155B, 37D02090B & 38D27238B.
4.2 litre - 40D09582B.

Which puts mine pre-94.

I have been told that if I can find that kind of information in a haynes manual to show at SVA it would be accepted, not sure if off Rimmer's website would suffice...

Any suggestions anyone?

Cheers

Mark

I'm going to have this problem too, so interested in responses.

You may find some more supporting evidence on the V8 forum, as they have a thread dedicated to this subject.
