There are two types of ring gear fitted to X-flows, depending whether the starter is pre-engaged or inertia type.

There was a thread on this within the last few days.

This old thread covered this subject:

LINKY

If you look at the picture halfway down, you'll see a picture of the 2 types of ring gear. Inertia on the left, with chamfers to help the pinion engage. Pre-engaged on the right.

You'll see that the ring gears are in different positions, and the pre-engaged one has more teeth.

In other words, if you want to swap the starter motor you'll have to change the ring gear. Last time I asked, the ring gear was around £30 - £40, plus a small amount of labour charge at a machine shop (the gear is a shrink-fit on the rim of the flywheel). You can fit them yourself, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

HTH,
David
