Type 3 gearbox

I've just got hold of a type 3 gear box for my crossflow Locost. Has anyone got a spare sliding joint for the propshaft, or maybe even a complete prop?

It's a 4 speed, about 3 inches longer than the standard escort box. It was fitted to early Sierras and mark 3 Capris but I think they used a rubber doughnut to connect the prop, which is no good for a Locost

If you have a word with someone like Bailey Morris, they will make you a prop to your specification.

You really do need a professionally made and balanced prop. You dont want it breaking...

I've got a caterham prop for sale. Its too short for my type 9 but if youe type 3 is longer it might fit. It bolts onto the diff and slides into the gearbox.

If you are anywhere near Coventry try Dave Mac propshafts Northey Road Coventry, 02476 683239 Ask for John. Very helpful and will make any propshaft. Or steering shaft.

Type 3 gearbox

I'm going to Coventry this p.m. so I'll call on them. I've used them before for driveshafts & they are good but I didn't know if they could get sliding joints

Ah one of those. Each to there own but it seems to me you're adding a lot of weight when compared with a type 2 4 speed with no real advantage. Have you considered a type 9 5 speed.

I converted mine over the winter from type 2 to type 9 and it's transformed the car. Well worth the weight penalty and much more civilised on a run.

Just discovered that the gearbox won't come out on its own (engine too), so maybe I'll continue with the old 4 speed until after it's on the road. I'd read that the type 3 box was stronger (hence the extra weight but really it was just to save bending the lever
