XE pressure relief valve
Following on from this thread:
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=64846
I decided today I would try and get the engine running again so unscrewed the pressure relief valve cover nut, but don't seem to have a spring
or relief valve actually fitted!
It's still in situ, but can put my little finger all the way in and have looked up the hole with mirror and torch and there's nothing in
there.
I know it's my own stupid fault for never having checked it when I built the engine, but it's run a fair bit (whole day rolling road and
driven round the block) so curious as to what has changed/happened as per my last thread (link above).
Should I just get a valve/spring out of another pump and fit that? Any other advise/suggestions?
cheers,
Ned.

If its got a spring fitted, you'd know about it. The spring makes it difficult to put the cover nut back on, you can't miss it.
Even without a prv and spring, you'll get 4+ bar oil pressure for a few mins whilst the oil thins, but once its thin, well you know what happens
then.
Bottom end oil pressure would probably have been OK for your idle stuff, although if its been on a RR in that condition I'd be worried about it.
That said, for what you can pick up an XE short block for these days just run it till it dies anyway then spend the ~£100 for a replacement.
Stick with the standard prv/spring assy but as said on the other thread, clean it up nicely.

I wouldn't have thought you'd have got any oil pressure whatsoever without the PRV fitted, cold or hot.
Personally I'd try exactly as you suggest, fit the PRV parts from another pump and fire it up to make sure you get good oil pressure and no
nasty noises.

Is it def the OPRV and not one of the tap off point for an oil cooler and similar.

Can't remember about the oil presure light, it's only linked to the bright 6, but tbh I noticed the noise and looked straight at the gauge
then killed it at the time, didn't bother looking at teh light as I didn't need to!
Def the PRV according to the haynes and all other references I've seen, was the cover bolt on the inlet side of the pump housing, perpendicular
to the block and just above the filter.
Ned.
here's a pic of the pump when building the engine up, there is a blanking plug on one of the holes where the oil filter goes on but I worked out
the route and was pretty sure it was because it was being run with a take off palte which I was also using.
It's the bolt as pictured bottom left where the PRV is (sanity check!)

You're worrying me with your description of the location.
Its on the exhaust side of block, bottom left just above the sump line, pointing slightly downwards.
25mm spanner reqd.
I've a pic showing it somewhere, I'll find it.

Sounds like I don't understand the haynes and am looking in completely the wrong place. Sounds like I've just removed one of the spare
tappings then.
Just trying to find a pic of the other side of the pump.
