Propshaft gearbox penetration

I've now got a rolling chassis, and with the help of the nipper, bled brakes and a working handbrake.

I plopped in the prop tonght and gearbox for a mockup. It looks like the splines on the propshaft go about 40 to 50mm into the type 9 gearbox. Does this sound a reasonable amount?

Not sure, but ours is determined by how far back you could get the engine! Standard MK prop, our bell housing on the type 9 has maybe 5mm clearance around the foot well and bell housing starter bulge...

I have just measured up, and the one I am going to use is more like 70mm into the tail housing,
I can tell by the witness mark where the oil seal has been. 40mm is not enough.
Hope this helps.

I have around 75mm, I think 40 may not be enough.

I'd check do this check;

Move the rear axle to full bump and rebound to check that it doesn't bottom out or fall off. (Probably easier with the shocks disconnected)

It's IRS, the diff isn't going to be moving about.

I had a similar issue, and didnt think it was enough really. I made an aluminium spacer to fit on the diff to push the prop further into the gearbox as my engine wouldnt go any further back.

If your engine will go backwards some more then thats a possible solution.

Some deft abuse with a dremmel to take the surplus off the bolt holding the brake light switch on and that allowed me to move the bell houseing to within 5mm of the firewall.

I've now got around 75mm penetration (so about 85mm engaged on the output shaft), or if I want a little more firewall clearance I can go to around 65 mm penetration/75 engaged.
