That is a rather ambiguous question. It depends upon your budget, how you want the car to drive, if you want an 'off the shelf' package,
what sort of power/torque spread you want. Try the search function, there has been so much discussion on this. The usual suspects are Fireblade, ZX9,
ZZR1100, R1, ZX12, Hayabusa etc. The more unusual engines would be V-twins, Triumph Triples (that is what I am using). You can, within reason fit any
large bike engine.

yes, it does make a difference. It means you can drive backwards instead of having to push your car about.

You might want reverse gear but you should really question whether you actually need it.
Very few bike engines have reverse gear incorporated and a bespoke reverse (such as a Quaiffe) will be costly, noisy and significantly reduce your
power/weight ratio.

All depends on budget and what you really want from the car. What exhaust / engine mounts Marc does as standard may be an influence as this will
simplify the build a lot (and save a few quid).
Personally I wouldnt look beyond a 2004 onwards Yamaha R1. Standard parts to fit into an MNR and plenty of power. Not silly prices either (mine wasnt
anyway!!)
If you want more power / torque then maybe a ZX12R or probably the ultimate now is the ZX14R - gawd knows how much this would cost as i guess you want
a dry sump too.

could probably learn to live without reverse just thinking it would be handy for getting in out garage etc
If it is going to cost alot extra and reduce power/wieght i may need to reconsider

For that price the ZX12 would be hard to beat.

How about a ZZR1100, I know someone who has one, me!
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=69593
I also have a GSXR750K1 for sale but that would only work well on a very light single seater, but it does has over 140hp as standard

2003 R1 approx 155/160 at the crank.
Good value motor and only requires a baffled sump.
I think Malc (Yorkshire Engines) will fit a baffle for little money if needed.

Later ones maybe 15 - 20bhp more (dependant on exhaust). Dont forget to factor in the cost of a Power Commander for an injected engine (£200 - £250)
plus any sump mods required (not needed for the R1 i dont think besides a baffle plate). Personally i'd seriously consider a little extra on a
4-2-1 exhaust myself too.

R1 is flavour of the month at the moment for a lot of builders.....
Cheap, powerful, reliable, lots of kit manafacturers will have fitted them.... And they're not that expensive (though obviously they've
gone up in price due to supply and demand now that more people are using them)....
I personally wouldn't fit a reverse gearbox (they sap power, they're noisy, they're heavy etc) but might be tempted to either fit
and electric reverse mechanism or at least fit the ring gear so that if you later decide to fit one it's not too difficult...

Basically a ring gear on one end (engine end usually) of the propshaft with an electric motor (starter motor) that basically winds the car backwards.
Generally a lot cheaper than a reverse box and much simpler to retrofit into the car if you cant do without.
Not had much luck finding out where to get parts myself but personally i'd say do without and get the car SVA'd first. Fit one if you find
you need one afterwards.

Get yourself up to Knochill on the 28th of July (SIDC morning session) or any Hot Marques session and you will see a few Westies or Caterhams with a
number of different engines.
Get a few passenger laps and decide how much performance you can handle ... a lowly Blade is still plenty quick......

Saw an MNR at Newark with a sprocket between the diff and prop - obviously for an electric reverse.
