Webber Twin 45 Advice
I've been offered some Webber 45 Carbs that need "refurbing" apparently...
Anyone have some advice on checking that they work properly, etc.....
What to look for before buying, etc.
What wears out, and how to identify it
Much appreciated

Depends on what is meant by 'refurbing', and how much you are buying them for in the first place. Pretty much everything can be bought for
Webers, dependant on age of units.
It's fairly difficult to check the condition of the carbs 'on the bench' so to speak. But its worth checking that they are actually
a pair, and not two carbs of varying age (look for same/similar numbers on top of the float chambers). Make sure that the throttle butterflys operate
smoothly throughout their range, and look down both barrels when closed to make sure that the butterflys are bothin the same position. It's
quite a common problem to have a bent throttle spindle, due to return springs being mounted on the opposite of the carb compared to the throttle
linkage. Not much else you can then do.
Finally, whip the jets out and check to see if they match, as well as the venturis etc.
HTH Stu.
Dont just build it.....make it!

I bought a pair of webers for £200 off a pinto westfield that was running a bit lumpy and had problems with sva on emissions (should have taken this
as a warning!).
I had them cleaned and jetted correctly and tested on a vauxhall 16v. The guy said they ran like poo, only on 2 or 3 cylinders and couldn't
find out where but suspects a blockage somewhere. The only thing I/we haven't looked at is the starter circuit or aux choke (the extra slidey
bits on the back of the carbs - what's it called?) that are solid and don't slide.
Anyone got any experience of similar problems or suggest how to find a blockage? I thought I'd cleaned them up ok, had the float chambers &
jets, air correctors, emulsion tubes etc out.
thanks,
Ned
ps Ben, sorry for thread hijack, though could be relevant to those carbs if you get them!
beware, I've got yellow skin

p.s.
Knowing me I'll strip them down and play with them anyway... so any blockages I'll find eventually.
Their off an escort engine from the sounds of it.... so they'll need setting up anyway.
Ned, we could have a carb cleaning get together lol
Looks like Richy got a good deal.... shame it's a ford engine

My advice is just get it running and find yourself a good rolling road technician.
That was always the way with the CVH in my XR2. Get it running well enough to drive it and let the rolling road man do the rest!

Dave,
Thanks for your reply.
When I got the carbs i gave them a little bit of a clean, but left them to do more thoroughly at another time. A friend was going to borrow them to
use on his vx 16v race car for the rest of the season (I'm nowhere near needing them yet!). My friend builds his own engines, does it all
himself and knows exactly what he's doing.
He told me that he thought he'd stripped them as thoroughly as possible, fitted them with mysiad plates to a swindon's inlet manifold
(same setup as is run on his other car - race proven) and he said he couldn't get them to run at all. he had re-jetted them for the 16v engine
and knows a a fair bit about it as he prepares his own car and we won the championship last year.
As i said the only bit which he might not have touched is the slider/aux choke thing on the back of the carb (engine side) which is solid and
doesn't move. i don't know what this does but suspect it could be affecting something!
Guess they'll need a further strip down and soaking in petrol, carb cleaner or this gunwash stuff you mentioned.
I'm sure i'll get there as he said they are in pretty good condition apart from the fact they won't run!!
thanks,
Ned.

webber twin 45 advice
Ben
I run dellorto 45s on my XE.
Like one of the guys said "me and my carbs have been thru a lot together"
I got mine preowned from cavalier 8v, paid £170. Took a chance, paid off.
My rolling road guy in M'bro luvs them, says far superior to webbers.
If the've been recently used the better,( i bought some 40s some years ago that had been stood in garage for 18mnths all furred up right
job!) At £100 they are worth it, just make sure they're a matched pair and nothings missing.

webber twin 45 advice
Mmm.
Now it starts to get tricky. Do you take a chance, or do you walk away. If your handy you can strip them your self and soak in carb cleaner.
If you type dellorto in search engine there is a site which gives you a parts diagram.
Good Luck!
