Is that tyre smoke? Oh no it is not pull over
Remove engine, tick.
Rebuild gearbox, tick.
Refit in to car, tick.
Pass MOT, tick.
Go for a drive and see some smoke coming from gear stick hole, tick.
Pull over a bit quick with fire extinguisher in hand, tick.
Dam rear crank oils seal has gone, oil on everything including cluch and exhaust hence the smoke. No fire and nuresed it home in one peice.
Any one got an idea why it would just go. The only thing I could think of is that I changed the stat so the engine was running at the corrent temp
where before it was running very cold.

Was it re-built or sat for a long time? Seals can deteriorate just sitting without being either lubed and/or moved - best to turn an engine over every
couple of weeks.
Which reminds me.....

Rusty, just another thought espec. if you're stripping it down. Before you take it apart check the end float on the crank is as per spec.
Crankshaft shims have been known to wear/disintegrate causing oil seal failure. Similarly when re-building best to check the float again. Cheers, Pewe

Think I will pop the sump of and have a messure rather than just putting a new seal in.
