Spluttering Pinto!!!!!!!!

Help needed please!
Just run in my 2 litre pinto after rebuild so now increasing the revs but at 4200rpm it just splutters and struggles to get any higher but does after considerable time!
It climbs to around 4200rpm and then splutters a little like a miss fire, i am sure it is fuel related, it also seems worse the wider i open the throttle.
Off load it revs freely no problem. I have changed the plug leads and upped the fuel pressure but no better. I have also set the float heights
Any pointers would be appreciated! It is a 2 litre pinto on 40's and a newman PH4 cam.

What ignition you using?

How have you set the timing? Are you using Vernier cam wheel?

Have carbs been rebuilt as well? or were they running on that engine before you stripped it. Im just trying to find out if it was running ok before and what has changed since.

I am running on lumenition, the timing is set to 12 degrees and yes i have an adjustable cam wheel and yes the carbs seem fine last year but i was not using this cam and the main jets are 135? Does this seem a liitle small??

Restrict some of the air going into the throttle bodies and see if your revs rise.
It could mean that you have an inlet manifold air leak if they do.
Don't up your fuel pressure too much otherwise the floats may pop off their mounts and cause flooding.

Did you say it was all running fine before the rebuild and since then youve just had the engine rebuilt and a new cam? ie no changes to ignition set up or fuelling?


What fuel pump are you using? I had some bother when i first built my car. I was trying to use facet red to through a regulator to feed 38DGAS (the logic being the pump was future proof for upgrades and the regulator would control it all). It simply didnt work. The regulator couldnt cope with the pulsing of the pump and even on lowest setting was forcing fuel past the floats into carbs and flooding them. I changed to mechanical pump and all was great again.

Ive also heard of people using the mechanical pump with twin 40's - apparently good for up to 150bhp motor.


What do the spark plugs look like (may not have been running long enough to get a true colour).

Is it the right coil for the dizzy?

i dont think the cam will have anything to do with it. In my experience even if the cam and ignition timing arent optimised it would rev better than you report - just will be down on power etc. Pinto's seem to be amazingly resilient to bad timing when you first fire them up. might be worth getting it ticking over and checking with strobe.



On the lumenition is there a trigger wheel of sorts inside the dizzy body (points replacement?). Is this aligned correctly? I know the std Bosch electronic dizzy has a trigger wheel and have been known to move (particulalry if you turn engine over with cap off and the spring clips arent moved out of the way).
