Oil Pump Leak - Still!!
I have a oil leak on my crossflow oil pump, but cannot trace it. It first breaks cover ABOVE the oil filter (sandwich plate) mating surface on the
rearward facing side of pump, then by gravity rolls down and drips of the lowest edge of the filter. It is a fairly major leak and produces a steady
trickle when engine running (none when engine off). I have done the usual mirror a torch job, but still can't actually work out where it is
coming from.
Have got an oil cooler takeoff sandwich plate fitted, and first suspected it was leaking from the upper seal of that, however resealed that and still
leaks. Then thought it was from where oil pump mounts to the block, again put some gasket sealant on and refitted. Now suspect it is the the front
cover plate, but cannot see how it is getting to where I observe the leak.
Has anydody had any similar experience and can suggest a solution?
Also, does anybody know where I can get an oil pump gasket and potentially an o'ring from anywhere other than Burton Power - don't really
fancy paying minimum order values for a gasket!
Cheers,
Andy

Gaskets for classics may be able to supply what you need.

I got my oil pump gasket from a local motor factors - had to wait a day, and they probably got it from Unipart on the other side of town.
If you have a Unipart in your town, worth trying there.

replace all the gaskets and clean the faces. the is a cover for the gears and one for pump to body; sealant is not required. check with straing edge
and feelere guages that the faces are flat.
check you have the sandwhich plate the right way up - I bet you have but .....
the sandwich plate has a flat face - this seals against the filter using the filters o-ring, albeit square in section (that is in place?)
and other side has groove for a sealing ring, this goes up against the pump body; again check it is in place and seated correctly.
Most likey you have a mocal plate and I donlt think the sealing ring is the same dimensions as you find on majoriyt of oil filtes, why was it done
that way is anybody;s guess, if I were maching them, I would have used the same size o ring.

I had a similar problem on a Vauxhall XE engine, just couldn't solve the oil leak and everything looked ok.
It turned out to be the oil cooler plate on the engine side, the "flat" o-ring looked to be in good condtion and raised enough to seal,
but it wasn't. The cooler sandwich bolt was bottoming out in its threads before the O-ring was compressed enough to seal as over the years it
had got flattened.
We replaced it with a new completely round O-ring, and toutch forests full of trees it hasn't leaked since!.

Looks like not good news, and left rather surprised. Got a smaller mirror and smaller torch, that enabled me to see further up the body of the oil
pump. Looks like there must be a hole in the body of the pump as you can see the oil 'appearing from nowhere'. I'll have to take it
off and have a look with magnifying glass.
The engine has stood for a good many years, but still puzzled why it should develop a hole.
Thanks as always for your help guys, Andy
