pinto engine timing?/starting problems

ok i cant get my pinto to start spec is twin 40s, kent fr34 cam kit and vernier. i have spark, the fuel pressure is set to 3.5-4psi, the carbs are filling up ok but fuel doesnt seem to be getting through as plugs are bone dry, im guessing that my timing is out? do the pictures look right? any help appreciated...

The Haynes manual gives a pretty good guide on getting the timing right I would give it about 12-15 deg of static advance to start with on the ignition. Is the rotor arm pointing at the mark on the rim of the dizzy?

Also you need to thoroughly check the cam timing to make sure you have followed the set up correctly and got it right.

Cheers

Mark

i cannot tell from the pics but a common mistake is to have the dizzy 180 degrees out.

BUT! - if you are getting no pops or bangs and the plugs are dry it would indicate that no fuel is getting into the chamber at all.

Are you sure that fuel is coming out of the idle jets? - if it is then where is it going?

Try a little squirt of brake cleaner into the carb inlets when cranking. If it doesn't fire then timing is likely to be out .

Why do you think the timing is out because the plugs are dry? It does seem that the fuel isn't getting into cylinder. I assume you've checked that there is a spark at the plugs. You could try squirting some petrol or another inflamable liquid down the carbs intakes to see if the engine fires.

Spray Easy Start in the carb inkates then crank it over, it will fire momentarily if you have the timing and sparks roughly right.

Are the carbs known to be working correctly - I'd remove the jets and check nothings blocked.

I'm told that the AA and the Rac no longer use easistart due to damage , they now use brake cleaner that isn't so volatile but will still start reluctant engines.

at TDC, shouldnt the cam 0 degs be at the top of the engine, not the bottom?

The cam is set so that number one piston should be at TDC

engine is now running thanks to the brake cleaner, seems to be getting very hot quickly would this be because the carbs have not been set up?

Hot ?

Could be because mixture is too lean and/or because ignition timing too far retarded.

But you would want to check these anyway. Good luck.
