Starter motor problem

Every third or forth attempt at starting results in a squealing sound as though the starter is not properly engaged. When it does engage it works fine. It all seems to be tight and works ok when its off the car. Is it knackered? If so can some recommend a replacement - its pinto( with RS alloy sump) to MT75 and Ive no idea what the starter is originally from - its marked 0789 77185D 44s 12v ER. Thankd for any help.

Could be the starter but could also be the flywheel ring gear. Take the starter out and check the ring gear by turning the engine slowly with the front pulley and looking through the starter hole at the gear.

Ring gear seems ok. On examination the starter occasionaly sticks as the pinion is rotated so Im seeking a new one. I just have to find out what it is
