Rebuilding a front wheeldrive gearbox?

The bearings in my tintops gearbox are starting to whine a little bit (Ok, a lot)...

Would I be able to change the bearings at home, or is it likley to require a press and complicated pullers?

Obtain a workshop manual for the car and read up about it.

Unfortunately they made the car in such small numbers there isnt a specific manual for it....

Will have to have a trawl through and see if they put the box in anything else...

Its a VW polo GTI 1.6 16V (AVY engine code) (2001)

If someone does have a manual for that box it would make my day!

Silly VW for putting such a weak gearbox on a tuned engine

TBH i wouldnt bother trying to do it yourself if your on your back on your drive.

I wouldnt imagine a polo would be the easiest to get a box out of. Is it diff bearings or shaft bearings?

Getting the box out is the easy part... Its got to come out for a new clutch anyway...

Im not sure which bearings are going...So might as well replace all of them whilst its appart...

I suspected as much...

The VW dealership will fit a "new" box which is basically a recond unit...

Because this particular box is so delicate, I would rather rebuild the one I have so I know its history if that makes any sence...

Think il go and have a chat with a couple of gearbox people nearby and see what kinda prices they are quoting for a strip and build..

VW have been fitting chocolate gearboxes for years, nothing new there

Try going on clubgti.com and looking up the user 'Hotgolf'. If he's still around he's a demon with gearboxes

fwd boxes vary dramatically in ease of working on them.

Vauxhall are a doddle, small press and decent circlip pliers and they are really logical to take apart and re-assemble.

Ford and VW on the other hand................

Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion retro car restoration and tuning
