Zetec follower pump-up???
I have had four episodes of engine failure over a few months. Well into a journey when the engine starts to miss, rapidly gets worse i.e. onto three
then two and finally one or no cylinders and coming to a halt. Has happened at a steady 50 once and at 70 three times. Engine will restart and run
normally for another 50-100 miles after a stop of 5-10 minutes. Running 2L zetec silvertop on omex ecu and bike TBs. Can't find the problem. Any
ideas?

follower pump up is usualy a higher than standard rev problem.
May be the opposite problem with not enough oil to keep the followers pumped up thus closing your valves.
But i would check the fuel spark etc. first.

Have you got the correct grade oil in it? Zetecs don't like the wrong type and it affects the cylinder head more than anything.

Pretty sure I put in 5-30 fully synthetic at the last change. I have a spare coil pack, running wasted spark (effectively two coils) and will fit it,
but it would be a bit odd to lose both coils at the same time and then have them both recover in five minutes.
Does anyone know what the follower pump-up symptoms are. I am clutching at straws here.

Sounds to me like a "heat soak" issue. Check the temps underneath your hood. Due to the compact design of a seven, it's very likely
you're getting vapor lock as mentioned above. This will cause your engine to misfire very badly. Not sure of your exact setup but you can try
wrapping your fuel lines/rail with insulation tubing or reflective heat tape. Maybe even a drive with the hood off...hope this helps.

There was a similar sounding problem on the Tiger Owners forum where the car would run for a while then stop, and restart again after cooling down,
althought the intervals were much shorter.
Turned out to be the fuel pump was knackered (have a look here http://www.tigerownersclub.co.uk/forum.html under "misfire again" in the
technical section) so may be worth investigating.

Zetec follower pump up is a cold start issue, provided the engine is getting up to temperature it isn't a problem provided 0w-30 is used.
This could be a few other things -- coil & EDIS unit are possible. It could also be loose debris or water in the fuel tank.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try to resite fuel pressure gauge from under bonnet to where I can see it. New coil going on. Will open up tank vent.
As fuel system has return from rail I don't think vapour lock is likely. Exhaust is wrapped but I will add more underbonnet ventilation.
Will peer into the tank soonest as its a bit involved. Anyone got an oil resistant fibreoptic endoscope handy. Would make the perfect tool for looking
into hollow dark areas without any effort!
