1.6 CVH MPG - Sort of OT
Hi Guys 'n' Gals
It's kind of off-topic, so apologies but I figured that as it's a Locost-common motor, it was still best here. I've recently bought
a 1.6 CVH Sierra to run me back-and-forth to work. My logic was that if it dies, the parts will be of use to someone here.
The engine is pretty gutless it has to be said. However, I hoped that it would be reasonably economical. I was wrong. On it's first full tank,
it delivered 21 MPG. Is this to be expected? How can I improve upon this? One thing that I've noticed is that the car takes an age to warm-up.
I need to check if the thermostat is actually in place or if it is stuck open. Would this affect my consumption?
The car has only done 72k miles.
Any thoughts greatfully received.
Cheers
TC

I would have expected better than that!.....
My westfield used to do 25mpg on a run and 14 on track....however, that was on twin 40's - I would check your ignition and carb, just make sure
it's all in good nick....

It's a smallish old engine pulling a lot of body about, it's not going to break any records. A bigger engine doing less work is sometimes
a better option.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I would expect 25 to 30 mpg even at this time of year.
Check the thermostat -- although ISTR Ford temperature guages tend to read low as the temperature transmitter ages.
Also check the airfilter.

I'd recommend that all the usual suspects are checked...
Filter(s) - replace if suspect in any way.
Plugs - condition, gap, etc. (poss. replace anyway?)
Plug leads - in good nick
You could also check that the timing is in the right ball-park.
Also - any brakes dragging slightly?
In other words - a basic service!

Is it a rattly cvh?? Ie do the valve clearances need doing?
A good service and tune up might improve it. Theyr heavy old cars for a 1.6 to lug about.

They have hydraulic tappets, no adjustment. They tend to get quite rattly when they have destroyed their cams and followers which is a common
problem.
