Zetec timing
Hi.
I set the timing of my Zetec as follows.
Fitted the flat bar in the cams rotated the crank pulley until the second notch is lined up with the raised part of the sump fitted the timing belt
and tensioned up etc.
Checked that all is still lined up.
Car runs ok.
Now I thought I would connect up a timing light and see what it looked like. However is there a set revs the engine has to be running at? because at
800 RPM the two marks don't line up.
Thanks for any advise.

The two marks when lined up are only intended to give you TDC for fitting the cambelt.
Haynes give a figure of 10deg +/- 2 BTDC. It then says this is under the control of the ECU and may vary widely at idle.

The ignition timing is dependent on the ECU settings, it is unlikely that it is anywhere near TDC when idling, if using an edis to control it the
timing defaults to 10deg with no timing signal from the ECU.

Ignition timing on a car with a wasted spark system such as the Zetec is not influenced by cam timing. You could fit the cams upside down and the
ignition timing would still be correct.

Thanks I thought I had read somewhere that you couldn't or didn't need to use a timing light.
at least I know now.
