Idiots guide to fine tuning a pinto....
The time has come to setup my pinto...
its a 1600 pinto with normal twin choke carbs on it (I believe the ones they fitted to the 2.0L....
It has a lightened flywheel and re-profiled cam...
Its running standard coil ignition...
I can start the engine and fast idle it with the choke on but if you open the throttle the engine splutters and coughs and then stops...
Im fairly sure my ingition timing and cab setup are both miles out...
Does anyone have an idiots guide of how to tune up the engine?
Which knob to twiddle when etc...
Chears.

If it starts and fast idles OK, I would guess the timing ain't far out if at all. Sounds like fuel starvation.
There again I ain't confused for nothing.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

I'd start with the timing. IIRC you want about 10-12 degrees advance at idel with the vacuum disconnected. Then look at the carb set-up - if
it's not the original carb fitted to the engine the chances are it'll need re-jetting to suit. I can't advise on specific jet sizes
though I'm afraid.

It'll be the ignition timing. As Nick says, about 10-12 deg will get you on the way.

Is that BTDC?
This may seem a very silly question, but what are the timing increments on the pulley? (IE. which makr represents, 5, 10, 16 degrees etc?

IIRC each big mark is 4 deg, each small one is 2 deg.
The biggest of them all is TDC. All the others at before top dead centre (BTDC)

Chears Flak..
I have managed to borrow a very shiny snapon digital strobe...
It doesnt have a manual, but im guessing I just increase the digital display to 10 degrees and then point the strobe and adjust the dizzy until the
biggest mark (TDC) on the pulley lighns up with the mark on the crank case

ok, So now I have the timing right...
What is the correct way to adjust the carb?
Obviously the jets may be wrong, but I wouldnt mind having a stab at adjusting the mixture as it is, see if I cant get it to run smoother than the
current badgers arse....

You might find some advice on redlineweber.com in the technical guides. I found some for the 38dgas in their.
Do you have a colourtune kit. These can get you somewhere near. Alternatively is to try and get hold of a gas analyser.

Found a good guide online, and some diagrams on that website, chears...
I just want to get it close so its driveable...
I imagine it will have to be tweaked to cope with the SVA emmissions test...
Lets hope things work out ok when I try it later
