type 9 oil leak

My type 9 has been leaking oil from the speedo drive. So I popped down to the local bearing supplier with the old seal, and come away with a new one. put it in, fill with oil and errrr.. worse It is in square too.
So what can be the problem, it is dripping oil all the time, even stationary? will a pukka ford seal be better? (anyone got the part number?) shall I get another box, or is there some other possible problem. The speedo is connected to an angle drive, but I assume the original cable would play no part in oil sealing?

TIA
Clive

No serious replies!! Well i will give it my best go based on no direct experience but i would now always use genuine Ford gaskets and seals wherever possible.

Make sure the area is clean and rust free before inserting the seal. Not sure if any joint sealant is used in that area??

Might also be worth taking out the speedo drive and inspecting it . Been a long time since I had one apart but IIRC there is a spiral groove cut in the shaft to return the oil back into the box. Could be fouled but most likely cause is you have damaged the new seal?

Are you sure it's not leaking from else where?
I thought mine was leaking from the Speedo drive but turn out to be from the propshaft the joint going into the rear of the gearbox wasn't fully welded and was letting oil out.

Def from speedo drive
Was thinking along the lines of taking it all out and checking it over, so that may be the next step.
The level is just dandy, the engine/box has just gone back in and filled to just under the filler plug level ( the haynes manual I have suggests several different levels depending on year, I went for the most full in case it leaked again. So it must be the lack of faith in the new seal that has done it)
If the carries on I will be searching for another box!
