Cross Flow Dry Sump Plumbing
Hi
After to many damaged sumps and red lights in the dipper on my crossflow at the track I have started putting together a dry sump system. A local
Formula ford race prep company had a new 5 port pump on the shelf that they sold of cheap as it was old stock and they tend to use 3 port pumps as the
filter does not fowl the engine mount in a formula ford. I have build a sump and have almost finished my tank and started looking at plumbing it all
up.
Problem is fittings. The pump has brace male to male adapters in each port. Two sizes that appear to be 1/2 and 5/8 BSP, although there is not
tapper on the tread, so maybe JIC??? I have been to several fluid and hydraulic companies and while most turned me away a couple have come up with
hydralic connectors that will bolt up, but the bore is tinny as they are designed for high pressure hydraulic applications. I can step up with
another adapter, but that is more bulk and complication. I fear the small bore could reduce oil flow and be detrimental to the motor.
Has anyone done this before and what did they use?
Thanks Blair

Could you not just drill them out to a more acceptable internal diameter?
You will be running at what 80/90psig whilst hydraulics tend to be in the order of 3,000psig.

Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

Yes, I am thinking about this. I will have to be careful I do not damage the seats on the fittings so I still get a decent seal, but it is an option.
Before heading down this track I was interested to see if there were better fittings or if the reduced bore is not an issue. Thanks for the
response

Have you tried contacting Speedflow?

They are really helpful, but probably better to talk to than surf / email.

I had a similar problem with 1/2" BSP to -10 JIC adaptors and I drilled them out on the lathe just to make sure the bore was concentric. There
is a "land" between the bore and the start of the sealing taper and I drilled out to this mark.
I managed to increase the bore from 3/8 to 1/2 which may not sound a lot bue as the flow is proportional to the square of the diameter it increases
flow by 50%.
Conventional wisdom is any bit of equipment you plumb in reduces pressure by 5psi ie a cooler plus thermostat and remote filter head knocks off 15 psi
so the effert is well worth while.
As previous posts have said these fittings are used for pressure not flow and they are overdesigned for our purpose

Burton Power do all the fittings you need, cheap too. The threads are not tapered and you will need to use Dowty washers to seal the threads.
DO NOT PUT ON KNOB OR BOLLOCKS!
