throttle stuck open - help!
Hi all - I have a small issue!
Cleaned up my engine and carbs (2.0l zetec with twin 45 webers) with degreaser and then washed off. Could eat your dinner off them now, but that would
appear to be all they are good for now!
I was pretty careful but obviously got water or degreaser in something. First it wouldn't start at all - so I WD40'd everthing. Then it
would attempt to start, but splutter and spit flames back out of the carbs!
Eventually got it started, but now the throttle sticks open and it revs like nobodys business. The throttle cable, linkage and butterflies are ok - so
what could it be? Has something stuck open or got blocked?
Any help really appreciated.

I was half expecting someone to say 'I'm on my i-phone, I can't stop!!!!' 
ah ha thought so carbs...
their freazing up, you need to supply them with some warm air this time of year. Very common, I'm sorry to say mine also do that. The air temp
needs to be about 12 degs or above to get away with out some heat. A real pain in the butt.
You should try them in the fog for a real white knuckle ride  . I remember driving up in the Falcon from about Dundee to Aberdeen with my foot off
the pedal  oh yes that was cool.

I honestly don't know what's going on. The pedal, linkage and butterflies all seem to be working - although on a first start after the
clean the pedal seemed a bit stiffer.

Have you checked for an air leak somewhere? it seems a bit strange of the butterfly is closed that the engine is revving

ha - now the wifes car does get the throttle stuck open for that reason!
Why would they freeze up now, and which bit freezes up? Hairdryer?

its the petrol evaporating when it comes out the jet, it cools the airstream down including the throttle body till eventually the whole butterfly is
covered...then it sticks
only solution is to warm the air up or heat the manifold (electric blanket heater) or preheated air from around the exhaust
I learnt to live with it, stamping on the pedal knocks the ice off or turning off the engine on hills and coasting along till the carbs warmed up...er
is that ilegal?
I have an ignition system kill switch fitted just for that porpose

I thought webbers were plumbed into the waters system just to warm them up a bit.

Every time I have had carbs ice up the engine looses power. Never had the throttle stick. Suspect something may have been dislodged when cleaning?
Check the obvious stuff first.

Check you have connected up the throttle cable to the throttle and not the choke by mistake.
Sounds daft but they look very similar and gives odd symptoms like inability to either get the engine to rev or idle properly as you are desribing.

erm - found part of the problem!
I was lying earlier, the butterflies clearly were not fully shut. While cleaning a must have manually pulled back the throttle linkage. This of course
means the throttle cable gets slack and the end of the cable surround popped out of it's bracket. Once I released the linkage it got stuck, thus
I was on about half throttle before touching the accelerator!!
It's still revving high, but I've also noticed the throttle return springs don't return fully. I may also have buggered everthing up
trying to solve the first problem.
DOH!
