Locost Zetec Questions

Hello All, my dad has some questions, unfirtunately he is still in the stoneage and is bearly able to use a pocket calculator, so im going to ask them on his behalf.

First of all we have built a Locost from the Ron Champion book with the back end from a Tiger Avon (We wanted the IRS)
It is going to be fitted with a 1.8 Zetec fitted with a set of motorbike carbs and running through a type 9 gearbox and a sierra XR4X4 Diff.
The questions we would really appreciate an answer to are as follows...

Where is the best place to get a cheap set of exhaust headers?

What starter motor will be best for the above installation>

Which side of the engine is the alternator mounted and which car is the alternator from, which belt?

What clutch, flywheel and thrust bearing is best?

I hope someone out there has some similar installation as we have, and would really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Hi mate, i'm getting my exhaust from GTS.
The starter motor is from either the DOHC or the CVH sierra's.
You can use the flywheel/clutch from the zetec but i think the thrust bearing is a sierra job but i could be wrong on that.

There's loads of info on here, the search function is borked though, so instead of a space in between search words, insert a "%" between 'em.

I have a similar setup to you, plenty of my pics HERE

Dunno about the best place for exhaust manifold, but the cheapest is your local scrappers and get one off a mondeo/escort

We used a starter from a 1.8 CVH (Sierra).

Our alternator is mounted on the drivers side, it's a small one from a small Jap car (Micra?) at the scrappers with a ribbed pulley welded on.
ready to fit

Clutch is a standard 1.8 Zetec, on a 1.8 zetec flywheel (you then get the crank sensor and trigger, no need for aftermarket one for your sparks) release bearing is from 2l Pinto (Sierra or Capri).
You'll also need a Pinto spigot bearing.

Edited to add THIS LINK which was invaluable when we were converting

I ordered an exhaust through GTS took 41/2 months to turn up and only after i phoned every 2 days, i finally got the name of the company who was making it and got them to send it direct.

They are Tube engineering on 01673 862286, Mike's the man to talk to.

The exhaust comes straight out the head, which should be fine if you've a book height chassis, think he said it was for a Leugo Velocity.

The less I worked, the more i liked it.
