1.8 Pinto Engine Performance
Hey
Just started an indy with a 1.8 pinto engine. It is completely standard at the mo.
I was just wondering how powerful it would be now and what would be the best upgrades for the price.
ie.....
a 2.0 pinto (is this a straight swap or is there some other mods?)
a performance cam (how much would one be would it be the same one for a 1.8 as a 2.0 and where is the cheapest place to seek one??)
and of course twin webers (prob too much new but how much should i expect to pay for a fair second hand pair + inlet?)
cheers

i read somewhere that the first step with any pinto is gas flowing the head, apparently thats the slow spot. Cams sacrifice one end for the other to a
certain extent, but good compromise ones are available. big carbs seem popular, bit expensive for my tightarse tastes! mine getting binned for a
turbo'd engine eventually!

i got given this link a while ago when i asked a similar question...

and another one here. think it was theconrodkid who gave me those so you can say thanks to him!! lol

2.0l pinto should be a simple swap and you can pick them up for peanuts (sometimes for free on here)
The 2.0l block can be quite happily bored out to to accept the larger pistons from a 2.9 V6
when choosing an engine ensure that the block has 205 written on it on large numbers, this is a stronger block as used in the cosworth. an injection
head is better regardless of whether you intend to use carbs or not but ensure that the head is sorted for unleaded - there are letters stamped on the
head to indicate this and a quick search through this site should tell you what to look for.

I think the cosworth engines were built with a '200' block.
Could be wrong tho'

2 wd Cosworths used 205 block. All Pintos from about 1986 used uprated block 165 = 1600, 185 = 1800, 205 = 2000. The block is about the only thing
that the Sierra Cossie did use though.
The 1800 it is a small bore 2 litre, ie same crankshaft, same external dimensions, under bonnet clearance etc.
Easiest performance upgrade is to fit a 2 litre, dead easy! If you do, use an injection head, all injection heads are OK for unleaded.
There is little benefit in porting 2.0 heads as ports are big anyway and not of good shape. Good race Pintos use reworked 1600 heads but they are
costly. Fit a fast road cam in your 2 litre, skim the head by 40 thou and a twin choke from an old 2 litre Capri and see 125 bhp.
Never fit 40's on a Pinto, they aren't up to the job. Fit 45's and a vernier pulley with a 285 cam if you wish and see 135/140 bhp.
Can't afford them, then look into bike carbs, this will be the way to go in the future and lots of conversions are being carried out now.
(Including my own X'Flow)
Fitting 2.9 pistons is easy to talk about but harder to do. That will give you 2.1 litre but involves a bit of machining and requires a vernier. You
are still left with the Pinto's achilles heel though - the rods.
I build lots of 2.2 Pintos but that's a different story.

Is the 1600 essentially the same block as the 2litre as well? basically i have stripped down a 1.6 for my donor car but have now decided to go with a
2 litre engine for better performance. will this fit together with all my 1.6 bits ok or will i need to change anything? (im thinking gearbox etc)
also, i know the 1.6 brakes arent as big as the 1.8 and 2.0, is it worth swapping them or will they still be sufficient?

If your 1600 unit is from an '84 on Sierra it will be an "E-Max" engine which is a very small bore 2 litre type lump. Everything
will fit onto a 2 litre from your 1600. Gearbox will also fit but you'll need to use your "small spline" clutch assembly to be
compatible with 1600 gearbox input shaft.

What is a small spline clutch assembly? Do you mean the clutch from the 1.6 or are you talking about something else?

Yes, you''l need 1600 clutch for compatibility with 1600 gearbox. Input shaft on 2 litre gearbox is bigger

So the 1.6 and 2L gearboxes are different? I thought they were the same...
