valve adjustment
situation came up yesterday when me and mate talking about valve adjusting ( sad i know ) I'd been told that if valves were rattling then adjust
them up regardless of the manufacturers settings till they just about stop, he'd been told that if in doubt let them rattle, better too loose
than too tight, what do think ?

Your mate is right let them rattle to tight and the edge of the valves will burn [ melt ]

If the clearance is set correctly then they don't rattle in my experience.

tolerances change alot when the engine warms up aswell so best not to adjust the play out.
either leave them be or adjust them to the manufacturer's spec.

No keep to the engine (or cam manufacturers )spec -- if the clearances are too close it will sap the power and burn the valves.
On modern engines valve noise can often be due to sticking hydraulic tappets or the use of the incorrect grade of oil (with hydraulic tappets using
too thick an oil leads to problems).
