Speedo cable right angle drive?

Hi all,

What have people done when using a mechanical speedo, is it possible to fit without using a right angle drive at the gearbox?

You are meant to have 2inches from the cable ends before bends, and a minum bend radius of 6inches (else you risk the cable snapping).. This is thus only possible by running the cable into the foot well area... Any photos of how people have gone about this?

The right angle drives seem to be expensive about 50 quid from speedy cables). Maybe someone has a cheap source (did ford use them as standard on any models?)... I am trying to save money by using the sierra instruments and cable, so don't really fancy spending 50 quid on the drive..

Cheers

Dan

Oh hello!

Faced with exactly same problem. Space between g'box and tunnel side is very restricted - b***dy difficult getting your hands down there! And I really don't want to get the engine + g/box out again.

So, I'll be very interested in replies. Maybe even chatting to Speedy Cables.

Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

I've not used a right angle drive and there has been no problem with cable breakage. I put an inspection cover in the side of the transmission tunnel and even a geriatric like me can fit the circlip to secure the cable to the box. I'm using a VDO speedo and Caterham do a standard cable for about £12.

However, I am a bit concerned as to whether the speedo cable will be long enough to reach the take-off point on the Type 9 which is several inches further back. Time will tell.

A right angle drive is fine but it has a screwed union T30 output so a non standard cable is needed and more expense............

I did a little re-engineering on a cheap 90 degree hex shafted drill drive. This was from Screwfix and cost about 12 quid. Unfortunately it looks like they have replaced this product with a more cumbersome version with a proper chuck. I'm sure you can still get one somewhere.

My adaptation involved a lttle lathe work but I recken you could get round that. Unfortunately I have no pics and it's not really possible to see how It's put together now in situ. Took me a few hours to make it up but I'm a tight git and figured it was worth the saving. It's done 500 miles so far without a problem and it got me through the SVA fine.

I had no choice but to turn my drive around as I mounted my gearbox a lttle higher and the output was dead in line with the chassis tube!

I bought the cable through the side of the tunnel and secured it to the floor infront of the seat, then ran it up the side panel and behind the dash. Its not the neatest of solutions but does the job and ive had no problems with it.
