It's simply a mapped ignition system that replaces a distributor and points or other type of triggering.
It's based on the Ford EDIS module which uses a wasted spark system (i.e. two plugs always fire together), and is triggered from a crankshaft
mounted 36-1 toothed wheel (i.e. wheel circumference is divided up into 36 teeth positions with one missing tooth).
What you need:
- Megajolt unit (either pre-built or build it yourself)
- Ford EDIS unit (units available for 4,6 and 8 cylinder engines)
- Ford coil and HT leads to match the EDIS module
- Trigger wheel, either a Ford one or an aftermarket one
- Crank sensor (from same donor as EDIS and coil).
- Throttle position sensor if not using MAP.
- Wiring loom to connect it all up (save connectors from donor vehicle!)
The megajolt system gives you the ability to map spark advance against engine speed and load, in the same way that all modern ECU's do. A
distributor with vacuum advance attempts to do the same, but it only ever gives a rough approximation to the optimum spark advance for any given
engine condition.
Load can be sensed either by manifold pressure (MAP) or by throttle angle which is useful if running individual throttle bodies.

Where do you get the Megajolt unit, Trigger wheel and the Throttle position sensor.
would i work on bike carbs, as i am doing a bike carb conversion, and it has tps sensor?

Either order the parts and build the MJ units yourself, or buy one ready built. Bill Shurvinton is one
of the main sources of units and kits in the UK.
The trigger wheel can be taken from the EDIS donor or can be bought from e.g. this
bloke.
The TPS can again be taken from donor, or you can use an existing TPS on a set of bike carbs.

I have a bike carb setup on my zetec. The carbs have TPS which gives you a 3D map instead of 2, without it.
What engine are you using? It was dead easy to set up on my zetec because a lot of the stuff needed is already there, but is easy t o install where
the Edis system was never intended.
The good thing about the Edis is it doesn't need the Megajolt, it will run the engine on its own if the Megajolt packs up. You just don't
get anything but -10 advance with the Edis.
Well worth learning about and a very cheap installation.
DarrenW has done the conversion on his Pinto so may be worth a shout.

You will need to have the carbs jetted properly but most info is for the 2.0L.
A very good upgrade would be the 2.0L SOHC injection engine and junk the injection system for bike carbs.
If you insist on the 1.6L then another cheap as chips upgrade is the 2.0L cam which drops straight in and has a little more lift and duration
effectively giving you a GT+ version of your Pinto still be lucky to get 110bhp but all the bits will fit on a 2.0L when you upgrade.

I have a new TPS spec unit fully built and tested from autosports kit available for £75 plus postage.
You would need to find ford parts Edis coil pack sensor and a suitable TPS, may be able to supply an Edis if needed.
Paul.

if you've got time - get down to the scrapyard
for mine I got all the bits + the loom for £25 (out of a k reg 1.3 escort)
with a bit of extra effort - I didn't even have to cut any of the wires I need
http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y170/mcerd1/Donor/IMG_4055.jpg
there are a few people that sell complete sets on ebay for £35-45 and trigger-wheels.com sell them too (I think someones already given you a link to
there ebay shop)

I knew nowt about it when i started. Quite easy. Main ead scratching bit on pinto is bracket fabrication. Make the VR sensor nice and stiff - no
wobbling and vibration.
I used the megajolt and edis combined unit. Came with leads etc - nice bit of kit. Pauls unit is cheap - grab it.
I got my trigger wheel from triggerwheels.com -great service. You can buy cheaper but found this to be trouble free.
I had some comms issues when i tried to map it but this was down to using the old version of software. Brent and several other people turned out to be
total stars and this was solved quite swiftly (albeit frustrating at the time).
It really is quite a simple system. Probs the 2nd best mod ive done to my car (after the bike carbs). Im only running 2D as well and even that is way
better than the factory electronic dizzy (my carbs dont have TPS as std and ive not sussed out good method to reliably make the aftermarket TPS
work).
I think the only thing to bare in mnd when you go for DIY ECU's is that few rolling road places will know what to do with them. You need to
invest some of your own time to understand the setting up and how to tweak. If you spend more for OMEX / Emerald etc etc you will be rewarded with
being able to ge a great fine tuning rolling road set up at some stage but it will cost you. For me the understanding and learning has been part of
the enjoyment.

Do you have to make a map up for your own car or is there a place where you can download them?

[There are maps on the megajolt site and others that can be adapted on the net .I supply a CD with the units with a selection of maps for various
engines to get them running, you would then adjust to get best performance either by feel on the road or on a rolling road.

good chance of finding one in most of the 1.3 and 1.6 fords between 1989 and 1995
the later cars will have the other bits you need (coil & VR sensor) but they have the EDIS part built-in as part of the main ECU
there are lots of other threads on this subject...

Lots of Fiestas and escorts from the early 90s had them , coilpack and crank sensors can be sourced from any zetec car.
You should be able to find a Fiesta and use all the bits from that, just make sure it is an Edis and not the later type of madule that looks similiar
but has a vacuum pipe attached as these are not suitable.
