Zetec - No Engine Number
I bought a 1.8 Zetec last year, it's brand new and doesn't have an engine number stamped on it.
What should I do with it?
Stamp on a number?
What number?

seriouly though, you can stamp on any number you want as far as I know, preferably one that is not used by another engine.
For SVA you need to prove engines age - surley the date on the receipt from Ford(?) is sufficient.

Just make something up - your engine, your number. You only need to prove the engine's age if it's old and you therefore want a relaxed
emissions standard; since it's new and will have to pass the full cat emissions test it doesn't matter exactly how old it is.

Engine number isn't strictly necessary.
I swapped an engine in my old capri and the replacement engine I bought had had the engine number ground off it. I sent the v5 off to have the engine
size changed and put the engine number down as "unknown" and when the new one arrived it simply said engine number "not
known".
But if it's a brand new engine without a serial number I guess you could make up your own.

Thats standard for ford.
The idea is that ford swaped the numbers when chaning a dead engine.
I have seen a few where they just could not be bothered.
I would go down the scrappie and find one with a broken cambelt and erm borrow the number  Well it wont need it when its shipped to china will it

As above, when Ford supply new engines the dealer should restamp the old number from the knackered engine.
Go to your local scrappy and get the number off an old. pre 95 engine that is going to get crushed then send it off to Ford for a pre 95 proof of age.
Chisel trhe number off the scrapyard engine and it's yours. No cat required then

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but does every single ford engine have a different number? or is it a batch or type number?

Ford engine numbers are usually the last two letters of the chassis number, and the numbers that fiollow.
At least that's how it used to be.
So find a Ford chassis, and away you go!
