Bike exhaust silencer on car engine ?

Anyone thought about using a bike exhaust silencer on a car engine. Only ebay seems to be full of cheap bike cans in both carbon and stainless.

?

If that is the case bung on a cheap scrapyard item for the test then lose it when you get home.

and of course you happen to have a spare bike can to replace it with

Just wondered if there was any technical reason not to use a bike can ?

well I hope they are ok.....

made a similar post a while back, and no-one replied

Bought a can anyway. Not gonna have it on for SVA cos it will be *MILES* too loud, but after my baby passes is going straight on.

Got carbon fibre jobbie for fifty squid, weights practically nothing

Gonna sound MENTAL too!!

thought I would also mention it is a race can, and theres no way it is restrictive, is a 2 1/2 inch bore.

wouldnt use a stock motorbike silencer, as although these would probably be quiet enough for SVA, they are pretty restrictive.

hope that helps

Hi

Just a thought, from a sort of common sense point of veiw.....

If a 2L car engine revs to say 5500
& a 1L bike engine revs to say 11000
the same amount of gas is passing through is it not, so a standard bike can should cope. ( off a bike with a single can )

Too much is just enough

Yeah, I have a bike exhaust lined up too following a similar line of reasoning...if it can handle 150hp of a bike engine why not 120hp of 4A-GE.......

I'm sure we are both way off with our logic....but it's worth a try...

I got an Art carbon can on mine, £20 from local bike shop and he had a shelf full of similar items. It's a bit loud but nothing like it was on a bike. It's on a 2ltr Pinto now.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Well enough info for me to find a cheap one to try. Must be plenty in breakers from the exploits of those middle-aged weekend road warriors (no offence ment to anyone)

1700 xflow

about 130 bhp would be the same as the bike it came off, also anything would be better than the naff escort silencers many people appear to be using?

Any nice shiny bike can capable of taking a 3.5 litre 220ish bhp Beemer engine output....?

I've been running over that in my head...

The Beemer is twin exhaust, but I'd either have to:

a) Have piggybacked cans on one side
b) Route one over the other side of the engine bay (straight six engine)
c) Make the two pipes go into one big one

I'll end up having to go single car exhaust I think.

Why not dual side exhausts? It would look awesome!

It depends how big they have to be.

If they need to be big enough that they pretty much 'fill' the side of the car then I won't be having twin cans...

If they're smaller though I may have to consider it.

I'll probably have a play with some pictures of the car on Photoshop when the time is getting closer to decide.

Metal,

I think if you were to try splitting the exhaust down either side of your car, half the pipes will be nearly twice as long as the other (route may be tortuous too).

Yep, that's why it's most likely going to be a single big car exhaust..

Whoops, major FU on my earlier post and I'm tempted to delete it altogether. Was thinking of a vee configuration.

I have a similar problem to Hippy's, actually, with not enough room along the side to squeeze in a header with long enough primaries AND a catalytic converter AND a silencer that's effective. The 13B is very loud, and most builders go with a race setup, tossing emission controls and using a largish 3" exhaust.

Mike Laws ran his exhaust down the side, then under the chassis, over the rear axle, and across the bottom of the rear section. This is the approach I will be using, in order to fit everything in. Even with a big pipe it should be quiet enough:

Pete,

Was gonna ask you what you were planning for yours.

Currently I'm thinking I'll exit the side with 2 pipes, outside the car will be a 2 into 1 which runs straight into a wide oval shaped silencer, then split into 2 again, with 2 long skinny silencers one above the other running up to just in front of rear wheel.

I'll probably be using 2" pipe for headers into the 2 into 1, then 3" pipe for the single section, then back out into two 2.25" after the split.

Hopefully you can visualise that.

Do you think that would give enough scope for silencing the beast? I think my main concern is continually burning out the first silencer!

GO,

IMO, the downsides of the parallel duals would be working out the hangers and heat shielding, and possible excessive heat from the upper silencer radiating into the cockpit. Otherwise, your proposed system should be very effective.

The best mufflers for rotaries are 100% stainless, including the wool used for packing. You will need that kind of qualty for at least that first muffler, and I wish you luck in finding one. I am lucky to have a hot rod exhaust fabricator near me, and their prices are not bad for a silencer of this type. Here's their website if you want to drool a little bit :

http://www.stainlessworks.net/Mufflers.htm

Is yours a 6-port engine? If so, you may need 2.5" for the center section in order to have sufficient back pressure to open the two extra intake ports. I notice that the 2nd gen performance systems all have 2.5" in the center (either catalyst or pre-silencer) then use 2.5-3.4" for the duals. 2.25" (stock diameter) should make yours very quiet, esp. with an intermediate muffler.

I'm planning on using 2.5" all the way through myself, with a super-long muffler, maybe 28".

Am I right? I dunno, just a roll of the dice

was thinking along the lines of a bike can for mine. Can you still get those removeable baffles that you shove in the end of the exhaust pipe? I remember someone mentioning it where his car didn't pass the sva due to being too loud so shot off down the road and brought this thing that you place in the end pipe, and its reduced the noise level just enough to pass? Any thought?

Cheers
Chris

yeah, you can get the removable baffles from Demon Tweeks (ooh, he swore). You can fire them in the end of the silencer
